Coasting on history
Back in the day, the Moana Surfrider used to be a premier destination hotel. While it still retains some of its charm, it is now underwhelming in most ways. Our "city view" room (room 450) looked out at the wall of the adjoining tower, and appears to be above an alleyway in which service trucks back up (*beep* *beep* *beep*) and the tourist bus stops and rings its bell for riders (*ding* *ding*) from early morning to late evening. Room 450 is also directly across from the staff elevator and service room which usually had used room service items, etc. sitting on the floor, with the door propped open with trashcans. Very unprofessional. The room was among the smallest I have stayed at in a western-style hotel (not surprising given the age of the hotel, but still disappointing given the cost), with the door almost hitting the bed, and had mildew growing around the air-conditioning duct. My wife and I had the breakfast buffet and the food was not worth the charge of $30 per head. The hotel also charges a $25/night resort fee that seems to basically boil down to 2 bottles of water, a picture, and access to some hotel events (none of which my wife and I had interest/time in taking advantage of). On the positive side, the bed was comfortable and the location is very good for those interested in the attractions of Waikiki. Most of the staff were friendly (although the host for the hotel restaurant seemed to be having an off day when we went there for breakfast). And the rocking chairs on the lanai are a nice touch while you're waiting for your car to be brought around by the ($15/night) valet. Given its location, I would imagine an upgraded room would have a great view and likely wouldn't have the noise and other downsides of room 450. However, as someone who has stayed at the hotel over the years (starting almost 40 years ago), the room quality, service level, and cost are such that I doubt I'll stay there again. Disappointing.

Wonderful experience
Loved everything about the resort except for the rooms. We had the diamond tower, oceanfront and was pretty shabby. Especially the bathroom which was small and in desperate need of remodeling.

Great, quiet, friendly hotel!
The Moana Surfrider is a great hotel and we will definitely stay there again. We spent 6 nights there for a babymoon and loved everything about it. The rooms are clean, updated, and very comfortable. You simply cannot beat the amaziog beds and bedding (even available for purchase!). We never heard a sound from any other room and as a result of booking online, got a free night and free breakfast every morning. The buffet is fantastic and was worth over $70 each morning and we got it for free. Huge benefit when you look at the price of similar hotels. The resort fee of $25 a day is a bit of a pain, but you get a huge list of benefits from water in your room every day, basic surf lessons, free self-parking, etc. and they don't nickle and dime you instead. We found the price of the hotel was great when you look at all the benefits you get. Free loaner towels for the beach, lots of chairs around the pool and by the beach, and its 50 feet to the water. The valet is $15 a day on top of the resort fee, but worth every penny. They are fast, efficient, friendly, and will gladly park and retrieve your car 50 times a day for the set price. Self-parking is only a block away, but valet is so worth it. One other great thing they have are "hospitality suites" at check-in that you can use to shower and change while waiting for your room to beceome available in case your flight gets you in way before 1500. Its free and they just recommend you use them for 45 minutes or less, so others can use them too. We got changed, gave them our bags, and hit the beach until check-in time. Our room turned out to be delayed by about 30 minutes, so they fixed it by upgrading the room and giving us free drink vouchers. Couldn't have asked for a better hotel experience!

Short walk from hotel
The beach bar at the Westin is great for drinks and light food. Would highly recommend a short walk next door to the outrigger to eat at "Chuck's" or the "Hula Grill" for dinner. Short waits compared to other restaurants and excellent food.

A peaceful stay
From the time I arrived at the hotel until the time i left, the staff made me feel really special. I got a nut lei greeting when i arrived, free breakfast daily at their reataurant, not a continental breakfast. a great breakfast with the whole works. The room was beautiful, as well as the view. It really could'nt get any better. unless it was free, but that is the only way. The hotel was more of a 6 star rating in my book. It was very beautiful and elegant. My stay was very peaceful and relaxing.

Great location in Honolulu
This hotel was in a great location -- on Waikiki beach and central to Honolulu shopping. Service was so-so though and the air conditioning in the restaurant and in the room was unbelievably loud and blowy. Food in the main restaurant was also not remarkable.

Try lunch under the Banyan tree in the back of the hotel on the beach Thai Cobb salad was really good. If you want a top end dinner, though, look elsewhere.

5th trip to Moana Surhrider
This was our 5th trip to MS. Every time my family stays there, we fell like we are truly on vacation. The location can not be any better, center of Waikiki & all the shops and restaurants are within walking distance. We have stayed Halekulani, Kahala, & Ihilani, but this hotel beats them all. Some may say the hotel is a bit old & out dated, but that's the beauty of it. With over hundred year old banyan tree in the center of the bar, it is truly amazing. Unfortunately, Waikiki beach was up for a major sand overhaul, and we could not enjoy the beach enough.

Beautiful, historic hotel
Beautiful, historic hotel in wonderful location. Minutes away from shopping and restaurants. We had a fantastic time! Would highly recommend the Moana's breakfast buffet -- wonderful food and great service. Hotel has many wonderful touches to make sure guests enjoy Hawaii, for example, lei making and crafts every day with local Hawaiian fellow named Nathan. Note to the Moana Surfrider: never discontinue the lei making and Hawaiian crafts with Nathan, because he absolutely made our trip -- the kids loved the leis and crafts! Nathan was also wonderful with giving us tips on things to do and see on the island (Nathan is a great ambassador for Oahu!). Would recommend taking the historic tour of the hotel, also. Would stay at the Moana Surfrider again in a heartbeat. Only critique: lack of hot tub (this is the only thing that we felt was missing).
