Great Weekend Getaway

This weekend was great to get away from the hustle and bustle of home and work. Complimentary breakfast at Tante's Restraunt with the view of the ocean right across the street. It was nothing like fine dining but it was relaxing, food was good, and workers were friendly. Overall, this hotel was comfortable. The only disappointment was the parking. Although I got a parking pass, there wasn't any parking in the evening so I had to park down the street in a public parking area and walk to the hotel.

Nice amenities, the condo had all imaginable kitchen gadgets and other things - very comfortable. Friendly staff, efficient check in and check out. Great location in downtown Kona. Overall, a great experience. Not a fancy hotel but very comfortable and a good value for the price. Would stay there again.

Orbitz saves the day

After booking and paying for an ocean front package with Orbitz the hotel placed me in a side room overlooking an old tennis court and parking lot with the ocean well off in the distance! The desk clerk didn't believe me and told me a move couldn't be accomodated for my whole stay (and I would have to pay more $) as the hotel was fully booked for most nights. One call to Orbitz and the error was resolved - I was moved to a beautiful ocean front room that had the fabulous view I'd imagined for months! I appreciate the hotel working with Orbitz - the rest of my stay was excellent. There is construction going on a result of tsunami damage from the Japan earthquake - but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the beautiful white sand beach and snorkeling cove.

This was perfect for our family of four with two older children (16 and 20), wonderful spacious condo, pool and jacuzzi, fitness center, the staff here is super friendly, we enjoyed every minute of our stay and would go back any time.... very close to Kona Village and shopping... no beach access, but many beaches very close by...

We arrived at 4pm on Oct 8th, 2011. The check in process was very efficient. The staff was freindly and knew and did their jobs very well. We were taken to our room and helped with our luggage by the young man from Texas. The Concierge went out of his way to help us obtain boarding passes for our return air travel. Donna, the staff desk manager was excellent. The grounds and room service personnel were absolutely outstanding. This is a great place to stay on the Big Island and we will return next year.

We booked this hotel as a package, so we got a great deal on it. We weren't really expecting a great hotel with how cheap it was in comparison to other hotels we saw but we were really blown away. We said more than once it seemed like a second honeymoon. When we checked in (which wasn't even until about 5pm) we did have to wait a few hours for our room, but it wasn't a huge deal since we went over to the restaurant where they had live music and got dinner.
Our room had a beautiful ocean view, even though there is no real beach to speak of at the resort... this seems to be a common problem for the island in general. Over, great hotel, we would certainly come back if we return to the Big Island.

The hotel is under construction, so we couldn't get that grand entrance and nice start. You must enter through parking lot and go to a pool-side room to check in.
Rooms are clean, but obviously showing signs of some age. Our bathroom door was peeling apart at the bottom. Some fixtures seemed a little dated. Pillows too flat.
Hotel wants to charge $15/day to have a car in the parking lot OR use the internet in the room. Costs more to park than to rent the car :(
All staff are very nice. The grounds are beautiful and plenty of ocean. Close your door at night or the kids in the room next to you may step out on the balcony at 6am and shout out. Happened to us twice... Once in the room next to us and once below.

Flawless Oceanfront View with Friendliest Staff

Spending extra was never more worth it. Spacious condo with good-sized deck hung over pool, palm trees and surf. What bliss to take breakfast outside for private dining in one's nightie! Living room was enormous, loved having two bathrooms, but wished we had a king or two beds in master. Office staff always there, always accomodating, and concierges knowledgable and helpful. Underground parking near elevator very convenient, pleasant smoking palapa well-removed from building, owners have thought of everything. Go condo! Only drawback was spotty housekeeping, which totally missed us one day.

Everything was great with the room, clean pool, pleasant staff, nice sand area, snorkeling, fantastic view and free parking. The only down sides were, no free wireless internet in the room (had to go to the lobby for wireless), $10 a day fee (mandatory) for ethernet internet and movie/game rental (did not need). The other bother was the kitchen, while it had every basic cooking utensil it did not have a basic spices or things needed to cook with.

Kona is the least touristy island which makes it a great place to kick back and relax away from the crowds. This is the place to stay. Location is great. Best part about this resort is that it's right on the water so you hear the waves crashing from your room and the whole resort grounds. Bar food is nice and fresh, not too overpriced. Staff are friendly and helpful. The lagoon is very cool and you can see angel fish and other aquatic life hanging out in there. The interior decor is a little dated. The guests are fairly mixed but seem mainly to be married couples revisiting but also a bevy younger travelers too.

Kona Village is a very unique and special place. The staff is so friendly and helpful. They really made us feel like ohana (family). Our 20 month old loved the children's pool and playing on their wonderful beach. The room in which we stayed needs to be renovated. That said, we didn't go to stare at our bathroom fixtures. If that's your thing, try the Four Seasons next door. The bed was comfortable and the linens were clean. Housekeeping did a wonderful job of picking up after us! The grounds surrounding the resort are gorgeous! We really enjoyed the food, especially breakfast. The luau is not to be missed. We can't wait to go back!

One of the things I like best about this hotel are the accommodations. Each guest has their own little house, called a hale. They are modern and spacious on the inside. The hales are distributed around the resort, some near the beach, and some on the pond. I prefer the pond area...it's very serene and beautiful.
The hotel is set up as an all-inclusive, meaning all meals included, but you can book it as bed-and breakfast, which I did. Obviously, it is less expensive that way, but the downside is that you are then paying ala carte prices for dinner (and lunch) and it is quite expensive! There are three dining options at the hotel...the main dining room, the "upscale" dining room, and the casual bar area. Dinners at the two dining rooms are $80pp prix fixe. Meals at the bar are off the menu, but still expensive. AND there are no other restaurants around for miles!!
Nonetheless, I still definitely recommend this hotel and would definitely return with my wife.

The seven-level property consists of spacious studios, one- and two-bedroom suites. Each deluxe unit includes a complete kitchen, washer/dryer, air conditioning, lanai and other in-room amenities.

Spacious One Bedroom Unit

Setting was quiet and several pools were available. We missed the opportunity to get to the beach without a rather long walk. The view from our unit also left something to be desired. It was also a further distance from town than we expected (4-5 miles).

This is a great location; well south of central Kona but easy to access to both north and south.
The facility is lovely with gardens and water features all around. The several pools/spas are convenient, clean and uncrowded. Especially nice was the balcony; we had breakfast and happy hour there each day.
Everything was provided in the kitchen and bath. We did buy some better TP. Pool towels were a nice touch. Housekeeping came once during our week; changed towels but not bed linen but that was not a problem.
Staff at the office and the concierge were friendly and helpful. We would definitely return.

The hotel is located across the street from a small sandy beach on the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Please come to our office at the Kona Islander Inn- 75-5776 Kuakini Hwy. Kailua-Kona, Hawaii 96740. Please call 1-800-622-5348 or locally 1-808-329-3333. If you arrive after 8PM when our offices are closed- our security guard, located in the lobby of the Kona Islander Inn, will have an envelope with your keys. Please provide your ID and or reservation information. Use the security desk phone to call for assistance if the guard is not in the lobby. Enjoy the sounds and freshness of tropical breezes in the evenings as you sip a cool tropical drink. The grounds and staff out standing. But there's always a but. The rooms are individual condos that are rented out through the front. So there are amazing rooms and then there's some that just don't cut it. Be aware and let them know if it's not up to snuff.

Kona Magic Sands

We were "upgraded" from the Kona Islander Inn (located in heart of Kailua-Kona) to the Kona Magic Sands (3 miles south on Ali'i Drive). We checked in and out from the Kona Islander which had major parking issues. Check-in was quick and easy.
From the outside the Kona Magic Sands looks old due to construction from concrete blocks. Masonry workers were resurfacing during the day and were fairly noisy. The on-site restaurant Jameson's was closed due to renovation. Not a big deal though.
The Magic Sands is waterfront property and if you down like crashing waves, don't stay here. It is aalso nestled between two awesome state parks. Each condo unit has a designated parking space (big plus in Hawaii). There is also an on-site laundry facility. There is a wash-off area on premises. A BBQ grill is available in a privately locked grounds area.
The grounds have an unheated family-sized swimming pool, sun chairs, patio tables and palm trees overlooking a stunning view of Magic Sands Beach and the ocean. There is no sandy beach on property but it is lined with a seawall due to a black lava rock at ocean's edge.
Each unit varied in accommodation. Ours had an enclosed veranda with sliding glass and screen doors. This was a studio unit with a 27" flat screen TV and a queen-sized bed (fairly comfortable). The veranda could be parted with a Japanese-style sliding screen which had several holes in the paper. The dining option was a table on the veranda.
The kitchenette had a full-sized fridge, an outdated cooking surface, microwave, coffee maker, blender and ample plates, cups and utensils for maybe 4 people. The spice rack was well stocked and there were some non-perishable condiments on the shelves.
The bathroom and kitchen had nice tiles. The sink and toilet were clean and newer. The shower was okay but the fixtures showed signs of corrosion. Hot water flow varied by time of day as I don't believe each unit had its own water heater. There were plenty of towels. There was also a small closet with extra bedding, pillows, beach towels and some snorkeling masks.
There is no maid service. A vacuum is in the closet.
The air temperature was comfortable with 3 ceiling fans but this would not be sufficient in the summer months.
The studio was pretty bug-free.
There are several permanent residents and "snowbirds" in the complex which makes it nice for security. The coastal highway is kind of noisy during the day and quiet hours were enforced in the complex. There was a deadbolt for security. I wish there was a digital safe in our unit to secure valuables.
There are not any shopping or restaurant options nearby. I consider this a plus but others may not.
Overall, we were satisfied with the price and options. This is not a four star establishment but a pleasant surprise for the money.

The staff was wonderful, the location was excellent - best snorkeling in Hawaii is just a 10 minute walk down the beach front (ask about it - we drove all around Hawaii snorkeling and then found that the best place was right under our noses - its not the Mauna Lani's beach but its on the "Mauna Lani Property."
We got a great deal and would do it all over again.
They also had FREE Wi-Fi.
Only draw back - they need to get ice machines.

This is probably the best hotel my husband and I have ever stayed in. The setting, room and service were unparalled. We were so happy here, that we hardly felt the need to leave the property, but we wanted to do some sightseeing since this was our first visit to the Big Island, so we forced ourselves. You get exceptional value for the money. In contrast our nephew, who was staying a few miles away at a different resort with his family, went back home to New York a week early because they did not enjoy their stay. Accomodations can really make or break a vacation.

Great noisy location

Uncle Billy's Kona Hotel is very conveniently located on Alii Drive next to all of the action in bayfront Kailua, Kona. We had a large room in the older, open section of the hotel, with two queen beds and a pleasant little lanai. The room was a little grungy, but comfortable enough with a small refrigerator, a room safe, and free wireless. A continental breakfast was offered, but I can't comment on the quality as we did not take advantage of it. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Parking is cheap at $5 for overnight. The room was not well insulated for sound and it was one of the NOISIEST nights ever, between a lovesick chirping coqui frog, late night partying and singing somewhere, early morning garbage pickup, and the worst, an eager leaf blower who started early before the mall across the street opened. That awful sound penetrated and reverberated throughout the room. Fortunately the room is moderately priced, and if you can sleep through any disturbance, you would probably find it a good value.

Nothing particular for that price. The rooms are old, but clean. The breakfast is just nominal.
There are many restaurants, gift shops, groceries etc. around, but the beach is not very good.

Not the best and the cleanest places. But works very well for people like me with special dietary considerations. The kitchen serves for basic meals. No dishwasher sucks. The location is very good for Kona.

Worn Out Units in Need of Remodeling w/ Incredible Views

Purchased Oceanfront One Bedroom for 7 nights. Arrived and got room #224, on north end of complex, directly above BUSY & NOISY Alii Drive the main highway. Bedroom was in back of unit on highway, kitchen and small living room were squeezed together oceanfront. Bedroom was so noisy, slept on the pull out couch in living room to get the oceanfront experience. Unit had very poor layout and limited views of surf. Also no air-conditioning (if not just to block the road noise). Very disappointed! Asked Maile at front desk for a room change which was graciously done. Room #316 was a huge difference, located in middle of complex. Bedroom and living room were oceanfront, kitchen in the back. Unit was very basic, 1980's styled condo in desperate need of an update. Kitchen was under stocked, bare minimum; double mattress was cheap, old and hard. Views are spectacular, no doubt. Stayed in Castle Kona Reef last year, better location, closer to town and much cleaner building and units. Overall enjoyed the stay but expected cleaner, more updated and fully stocked units. Will look elsewhere next time.

We mostly shopped and rested before our return trip home, but enjoyed the groups who were having fun at the BBQ. The view was spectacular any time of day or night.

PERFECTION!

We have been to many of the best resorts in the world and have never experienced such service and perfection. Expect all the staff up to the general manager to know your name. Beautiful comfortable rooms...perfect beaches and sunsets...great restaurants..amazing service in every way to make your vacation perfect. A little pricey but if you are looking for the ultimate getaway and need to chill this is it by far. We cannot wait to go back..well worth the money.
