KONA'S BEST LOCATION - With a dramatic oceanfront setting overlooking picturesque Kailua Bay, the Royal Kona Resort offers great value and is conveniently located within walking distance to the village of Kailua-Kona with its many fine restaurants, shops, historical sites, and activities.

Ideally situated on 12 acres of tropical gardens on a lava promontory, the Royal Kona Resort is surrounded on three sides by the crystal clear waters of the blue Pacific. The resort is comprised of three guestroom towers, and all guestrooms in the Alii and Lagoon Towers were completely remodeled in 2006, offering guests a fresh, new, contemporary decor. The resort's Bay Tower offers travelers a choice of comfortable, value-priced guestrooms which were refurbished in 2001. Each of the resort's spacious guestrooms feature large outdoor lanai's on which guests can enjoy the tranquility, and take pleasure in beautiful mountain vistas or gaze out across the magnificent Pacific Ocean.

A relaxing open-air lobby and surrounding tropical salt-water fishpond lead out to an expansive oceanfront sundeck and split-level freshwater swimming pool which is impressively perched on a lava flow directly above the ocean. The resort also features a private sandy beach cove and sheltered salt-water swimming lagoon which is perfect for snorkeling.

Other resort amenities include four Tennis Courts available for day or evening play, rejuvenating massage and spa treatments at the resort's Lotus Center, complete hair, nail and skin care salon services, and great on-property shopping. Island specialists are available at the resort's Activity Desk to assist guests in booking tours and to recommend other island attractions, and specialists are also available on-property to assist couples with destination weddings and vow renewal ceremonies.

Kona's very best dining experience is showcased in a truly world-class ocean-side setting at the Royal Kona Resort's award-winning Don The Beachcomber restaurant. And guests will find live entertainment, light meals and a variety of tropical beverages, including the Original Mai Tai, at Don's Mai Tai Bar. With its open-air setting, right on the water's edge, Don's is the perfect spot to enjoy the sights and sounds of all of the activity taking place on Kailua Bay, and a great place to catch a breathtaking Kona sunset. Several nights a week, the resort also presents Kona's only oceanfront Luau, the "Lava Legends and Legacies Polynesian Luau", amidst a lovely oceanfront Coconut Grove.

For a great location in the heart of Kailua-Kona, gracious Hawaiian hospitality and service, and the Big Islands best value, the Royal Kona Resort is an excellent choice.

A perfect retreat in Kona

Kona is the least touristy island which makes it a great place to kick back and relax away from the crowds. This is the place to stay. Location is great. Best part about this resort is that it's right on the water so you hear the waves crashing from your room and the whole resort grounds. Bar food is nice and fresh, not too overpriced. Staff are friendly and helpful. The lagoon is very cool and you can see angel fish and other aquatic life hanging out in there. The interior decor is a little dated. The guests are fairly mixed but seem mainly to be married couples revisiting but also a bevy younger travelers too.

There are several inexpensive local bars and restaurants a short walk from this resort on Alii Drive. Bongo Ben's does a great breakfast if you sleep in past the hotel buffet.

Good location is about all

The location of this hotel was very good but as far as amenities and friendly staff that is a much different matter. The bathroom was extremely short on the number of towels. The coffee maker in the room was never replenished after the maid came. Extra cost was never openly indicated. Parking was $10 a night per vehicle, wi fye was $10 a day. Extra charges that were not legitimate were added on to the total bill and had to be removed. The restaurant staff were beyond rude, never smiled, were unhelpful, created an atmosphere which was very unpleasant.

A Great Place to Relax

The Royal Kona was a great place to relax and to enjoy the sights and sounds of Kona. It is only a short, five minute walk to the friendly shopping and eating district frequented by many tourists.

Great location.

The hotel is at a very good location, very close to the downtown. It is quite old as compared to the pictures they have put up online. They don't have microwave in the room. You have to pay extra for the coffee. Get your own conditioner, they don't have any. You can see their Luau dances for free from your hotel room or the pool.

Nice ambiance even though it's a little worn

The pros: I loved the decor and architecture. We had an ocean front room which has a lovely view that was worth the upgrade. There are several lounge and sitting areas with slightly different looks making for nice variations in scenery all in one location. It's near one end of the tourist strip, which was great for us because it was slightly away from the noise and gaudiness but well within walking distance of all of the activity, shops and restaurants. They offer a nice luau on site, which we attended and enjoyed. (I gathered that some other locations' luaus are more elaborate.) The cons: the rooms and some of the lounge areas were a little worn in places, needing paint or other maintenance touch ups. The rooms were a little smaller than I expected. The restaurant closes early and there is no room service at all. Overall, the pros outweighed the cons and we enjoyed our stay.

Sightseeing tip: In Hotel

There are two sales booths on site selling tours, attractions, activities. We purchased from 'pleasant'. The sales person was unnecessarily misleading on two or three specific topics. As a result, I would not buy from them again.

Good hotel

Pros: Right by the ocean and close to shops and restaurants. Room was comfortable and charming. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Cons: Wireless internet and parking not included ($10/day each). My bathroom faucet gushed water all over the counter every time I used it. The room was sometimes noisy (could hear other people flush toilets in the next room and I was situated over the main entrance so I could hear people coming and going all night).
