Unexpected Delight
Driving up to the hotel, I thought, "I am in the right place?" But once inside, the staff was warm and welcoming, the room was HUGE and clean, and the complimentary breakfast was well beyond the coffee and donuts I've experiences at other places.

Great location!
Close to Drake University, this hotel is cozy and quiet. The room was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this hotel.

The toilet was clogged and ran. The bath tub stopper did not work. All I wanted to do after driving 710 miles from Denver was to soak in a bathtub. I could not do so without holding something over the drain with my foot. Not too relaxing.

Unpleasant stay....
The host put me in a room across from the laundry and said I could move the next day. I did move as it was quite noisy. The next room they gave me was listed as non-smoking but smelled heavily of smoke. The carpets felt grimy under my feet. To top things off on my last day the maid came into my room as I was dressing even though I had clearly displayed the do not disturb sign. The staff was friendly but the hotel was not the best, and I felt that little attention was given to airing out the smoky room. I won't be returning.

Great Stay.
I stayed at the Holiday Inn express while visiting my daughter. She is a student at Drake University and the hotel is across the street. I was impressed with the accomadating staff and cleanliness of the hotel. As they were locating my reservation, they offered me a cookie and asked about my room preference. The room was spotless and the bed was very comfortable. The complimentary breakfast had quite a variety, everthing from bacon and eggs to cereal. My car broke down in the parking lot and the extremly courteous staff allowed me to check out at 1:30. I will always stay at this hotel while in Des Moines. It's an excellent value with its proximity to Drake, comfortable, breakfast and accomadating staff.

There's a great dining district downtown in a historic neighborhood on the corner of Court Ave and 4th Street with lots of outdoor restaurants and bars.

wonderful stay
This was the best free breakfast I've ever been to. The hotel was very comfortable. Being next to a university I was afraid it would be roudy, but it was very quiet. Shopping is a short drive into the city.

A clean, well run property.
The Holiday Inn Express is located in a quiet area yet quite close to other amenities. The hotel and our room was very well maintained. The staff was friendly and helpful and we would return again if the opportunity arise.
