Chicago's Essex Inn has an ideal location ideal on Michigan Avenue, just a few blocks south of the more congested areas of downtown Chicago. Grant Park is across the street, along with many famous Chicago attractions, including Millennium Park and the Art Institute. Sleek in design, the Essex Inn boasts a metal and glass lobby, floor-to-ceiling windows with city views and an impressive atrium housing a large pool. ADA-compliant areas are also available at Chicago's Essex Inn.
Rooms
A color palette grounded in rich orange and brown earth tones keeps the scene warm. Floor-to-ceiling windows play up the hotel’s strongest asset, the city views. Flat-screen TVs and refrigerators are standard amenities in each room at Chicago's Essex Inn. Guests can have complimentary access to wireless Internet. Rooms also feature ADA-compliant areas.
Property features
In a metropolis like Chicago, pools and green space are precious real estate. Chicago's Essex Inn has both.

The garden pool feels like a competitive swimming complex, with a retractable atrium and global flags hanging from the rafters. The pool area features large windows that look out onto the well-manicured grounds of the rooftop garden. From the garden, guests enjoy skyline views of Grant Park and Lake Michigan from comfortable patio chairs and tables. Next to the pool is a large fitness center, featuring bikes, treadmills, weight machines, free weights, as well as six TVs.

Visitors to Chicago who have come to sightsee take advantage of a hotel shuttle bus free of charge. It makes several stops along Michigan Avenue, including Water Tower Place. Other stops include Navy Pier and the Museum Campus.

Travelers who want to stay connected access high-speed wireless Internet throughout hotel for a fee, or visit the 24-hour business center.

2nd Time Here

Conveniently located in the South Loop area across from Grant Park. Quieter and less crowded than staying further up on Michigan Ave. Easy 2 block walk to the Red Line, buses in front of the hotel. A few very good restaurants within a couple of blocks, including Lou Malnatis, Eleven City Diner and The Yolk. There is also a full service restaurant and bar in the hotel, a full time front desk, bell service and a very large pool. My only complaint is the very small sink in the bathrooms. The hotel was recently sold, so room renovations are in the works, although the rooms are very quiet and nice to begin with. The hotel was built very solid in 1963. I will stay there again.

A good time

The hotel was clean, close to attractions, and had a gym and pool. I had a lot of time to relax and explore from this hotel just a walk away from many activities and also snuggling inside when it was freezing outside.

Good location.

Hotel is well located on South Michigan ave, next door to the hilton and overlooking grant park. There are a lot of good restaurants nearby, I would recommend Yolk, 11 City Diner and Flo and Santos. Buddy Guys legends is just round the corner, diner acoustic sets are free, the one we saw had a fantastic female singer. A City sightseeing tour stops outside hotel, and there is a Segway tour company just round the corner. Rooms are fairly modern, but the bathroom is tiny. The hotel is primarily a glass structure which is great for light but not good for sound insulation, I would recommend taking some ear plugs. There is a pool but it's a little scruffy around the edges and needs a makeover. On the negative side our room wasn't ready until 5pm, and wasn't what we requested. However the receptionist did deal with this offering a different room and a free breakfast. Overall a good value hotel, but if you want luxury and are prepared to pay look somewhere else.

Great Location

Great location for what we wanted to do in Chicago, walking distance to the Shedd Aquarium and Art Institute and the bus stop for the Musuem of Science and Industry was right there. The room was small but clean. We had a corner room about a block from where the Metra runs so hearing the train rather loudly at night and early in the morning wasn't that awesome but its Chicago so it's not surprising. The staff was helpful and friendly but they could have used a couple more people at the front desk during check-in.

Great place to stay to visit Chicago

Hubby had a business trip and I tagged along. Great location! We had a corner room that had a great view of downtown Chicago. Not super fancy. It was worth the price.
