Clean, Convenient, Inexpensive
The Chicago Essex Hotel was very clean as well as convenient being downtown near shopping, tour buses, restaurants, art galleries, etc. About 20 miles from airport. Staff was courteous and nice room with internet and copier which enabled us to check in and print our tickets right from the hotel for our return trip. Nice garden patio, pool area, and hotel restauant. Would stay again - not fancy but affordable and clean.

THE PERFECT LOCATION
I stayed at the Essex Inn and it was the BEST location for the downtown area. I was literally right across the street from Grant Park where the free summer jazz concerts are held. The room was so clean. I like to describe this hotel as retro chiq. The outside of the building is the original from years ago, but once you enter another world. So modern. The funiture was nice. My room was great, bed comfortable. I staff was so friendly and helpful. The hotel is walking distance to EVERYTHING downtown and they provide a FREE shuttle service to the Magnificent Mile. I also enjoyed the heated ppol and sauna. Overall I rate this hotel WONDERFUL. I had a wonderful trip.

A Cool Hotel with a Great Location
Chicago's Essex Inn was like staying on Manhattan's Central Park South without the high prices. This cool boutique hotel lacks a lobby but makes up for it in the spaciousness and modernity of the rooms. Looking out over beautiful Millenium Park, the visitor only has to walk a couple of blocks to be in the heart of Chicago's culture and verve. Taxis are plentiful and public transportation is conveniently located several blocks from the hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

A cut below the fancy hotels, but had a pleasant stay
Chicago Essex Inn is in a very good location - close to Grant park, many museums, a supermarket, and the trains. I had lovely views from my room on the 11th floor. The hotel is not fancy (modest lobby), but it is pleasant enough and the rooms are very comfortable with some nice touches. The room has a fridge, which I appreciate. The gym was very large. The internet was not free but, at $6 per day, it was at least close to reasonable and it was fast. My only complaint is that although the room felt spacious enough, the bathroom was quite small. Overall, I would recommend this hotel.

Nice hotel in a great location
We were pleasantly surprised by how nice this hotel was. The pool/fitness room was one of the nicest we have ever seen in a hotel. The room was quite large. We had in-room coffee and a small refrigerator which was very convenient. The bed was quite comfortable. The biggest complaint we had about the hotel was that the heat was very high in the hallway. We do not like to sleep in warm rooms, so we just completely turned the heat off in our room which was just fine. The Essex was located just across the street from the Park so if you like to take a walk, it was a great location. It was close to the museums, to bus stops and the train.

The Little Hotel that Could
The Essex Inn has a great location. Staff was very welcoming and helpful. Though upgraded, rooms were not 4 star...no dresser in bedroom, very small closet...and bathroom was incredibly small...sleeper sofa was not very comfy...But bedroom and living room were large...2 phones and 2 TVs...large windows...air conditioning didn't work very well and when sun poured in it was warm..Pool and fitness center on site are a plus. Also a plus that there's a restaurant attached. Would definitely go back.

Exceeded expectations
Our room at the Essex Inn Chicago was just beautiful. We had a fantastic room on the south east corner of the hotel, and had a great view of Lake Michigan from Navy Pier to the north to Soldier Field and the museums to the south. I believe the hotel had recently been remodeled, and rooms were beautifully done in rich golds, browns and purples. The bathroom was small, but certainly adequate, and not unexpected, in an older, urban hotel. Location was perfect for our activites in Grant Park. Hotel staff was very pleasant and helpful.

Two great restaurants nearby for a casual meal - Yolk is just south on Michigan for breakfast (all day) and lunch. Eleven Diner a couple of blocks south on Wabash - open 8a - 9p most days, late night on the weekends. Upscale diner, plus a (quiet) bar.
