An Excellent Choice

The State House Inn is a great choice for a visitor to Springfield, IL, especially one to visit any of the downtown's historical venues or to see the state capitol. The SH Inn's rooms and amenities are very good, and the staff is outstanding. Since the hotel lobby and bar are relatively small, a person enterting the hotel might feel as though the wedding reception guests haveovertaken the hotel, but the Inn is highly recommended. I have stayed there several times and plan to be there again.

Great beds

The legislature wasn't in session--the downtown was dead on a Thursday. It would be nice if there was food in the bar-popcorn only. Clean and quiet, friendly staff, very comfortable beds; Simmons model.

Clean, nice, sufficient

The hotel was nice enough, and clean, but the walls were so thin I could hear someone yawn in the room next to me.

A decent hotel -- I'd probably go back

Nothing special here -- an average room, pleasant staff (especially the maintenance man who helped us because our key cards didn't work). The location's pretty good -- you can walk to the state capitol building, some good museums and a couple of good restaurants. The free breakfast was somewhat better here than at other hotels, so that was a plus. All in all, a decent experience.

A comfortable classic

This hotel is a mid-century period piece that has been well preserved (or recently updated): comfortable, a very pleasant staff, and an architectural/design gem for all those who grew up with the Jetsons. Apart from the buffet breakfast, no food is served in the hotel, but one can easily walk to the downtown restaurants - and to most of the historic destinations. Now if only the housekeeping staff would make sure that those fitted sheets were secured at all four corners of the mattress... Nonetheless - recommended...

Excellent location, friendly staff, but.

I've stayed here several times over the years and still recommend it. However, I'm seeing signs that improvements may be needed soon to sustain the price level (compared to other nearby options). No serious complaints, just little things like discoloration/stains in the wall coverings, loud & inconsistent heating/AC, and sheets that slip off the mattress. And there is no in-room wi-fi, restaurant, pool, etc. But the plusses include a good location, free parking, and a wonderful breakfast buffet. The 50's-60's "modern retro" design gives it character - missing in other downtown locations. The staff was quite friendly and cheerful. All-in-all, it is still at the top of my 3 fave choices for visits to downtown Springfield.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

Maid-Rite sandwich shop - at Jefferson & Pasfield is a old-time diner serving unique loose-meat sandwiches, root beer floats, shakes, etc. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and claims America's first drive-thru window.

Clean and comfy with very loud alarms

We stayed two days and the location is central to most historical sites. We love the retro look and the beds are the most comfortable. The staff is friendly and helpful, and went out of their way to apologize for the fire false alarm. The "drill" at 4 am was caused by a smoker on the 6th floor trying to sneak a cigarette under a smoke detector. Other than the inconsiderate smoker, our stay was wonderful. This hotel is a bit pricy but worth the money.
