Weekend at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel

  • Tibbs and Julie
  • 14 May 2012
We really enjoyed our weekend in Bar Harbor, Maine. We stayed at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel because it is on Main Street and is in walking distance to all stores and restaurants. It was a great place to stay. The staff was very helpful. The only thing we thought was missing was an indoor pool. We like to relax after a busy day of sightseeing and shopping. to relax before we go out to dinner.

The housekeeping staff was imported from around the world and worked seven days a week...nice (sarcasm). The hotel was maintained well but when I requested an additional pillow, our first night, it took three calls, eventually to the Manager on Duty to make that simple request happen.

Sehr positive Überraschung

  • Reisender aus Wien
  • 15 Nov 2011

A bang for your buck!!

  • 3 Sep 2011
This place already has great reviews and it did not fail us either! We checked kind of late but we were greeted by owner Wyman who was very friendly and willing to give us any tips on enjoying our stay at Bar Harbor. We were at the motel without a kitchen and compared to the price we've paid for it, the room was kept very clean and there was a nice patio which we used to watch the stars at night!! Amazing view and so romantic!! Another plus was the cute little pond they had with a paddle boat and a water tricycle looking boat( for lack of a better description). You can really see that they put a lot of love and effort into keeping this place to a level far better than expected or paid for! We would definitely stay here again but at a cottage next time since they looked really cute too!!

The good and bad

This was a very dated hotel and the outside was all peeling paint and dirty carpet and windows. There was no exhaust fan in the bathroom and the room smelled musty. All in all not a good hotel, we would never go back.

The door to the outside had a gap in it so large you could see through it. The remote control for the TV didn't work and after they "fixed it" you still had to get up to turn it off and on. The AC never cooled the room off even though it was on high constantly. Not the place to stay.

My review of Atlantic Oakes Resort

  • Linda
  • 19 Jul 2007
I found The Atlantic Oakes a very nice place to stay. Its located close to downtown Bar Harbor and Arcadia National Park. The grounds are beautiful. Indoor and outdoor pools is a good idea , considering it rained one day of our stay and the kids could still go swimming. small fitness room. only a few machines. Coffee and Hot chocholate in the lobby is a nice touch. friendly staff. They have a woman at an information desk who was very helpful. We were in the main building. The rooms were clean. nice view of the ocean and the ferry. fresh towels and toiletries daily. Serves breakfast only, no dinner or bar service, but many places close by. Would definitley stay there again.

Description
Perched high on a bluff overlooking the picturesque Frenchman Bay the Bar Harbor Hotel Bluenose Inn is a stately addition to the view looking back from the water onto Mount Desert Island. The historic property built by the wife of the late American artist William Morris Hunt and owned by a progression of Americas most influential families has become a standard bearer among the inns offering hospitality to the many visitors who come to appreciate the wild beauty of the Downeast coastline and Acadia National Park. The 98 room 4 diamond resort dressed in classic Victorian architecture features two lodging buildings appealing both to those who are looking for the luxurious in the Mizzentop and those who desire the personalized service of an upscale resort with more modest accommodations in the Stenna Nordica. All guests enjoy the use of indoor and outdoor heated pools Jacuzzi steam room fitness room and on property massage therapist. For the dining pleasure of guests breakfast and dinner is casual at the Rinehart Wonder View Restaurant with its glass walls and stunning views of the bay. The Great Room Bistro and Lounge offer light dining full beverage service and entertainment nightly in season. The Rose Garden is the crown of dining experiences in Bar Harbor. This four diamond restaurant furnishes culinary artistry and unparalleled wine selections in the beautiful garden motif dining room. With all its beauty and amenities there isnt much left for the guest to have to bring with them. But of any of its features the most striking is the passion with which every member of the staff seeks to be of service to each guest. In short their goal is to spoil you.

Great location, tiny shower

  • 24 Jul 2009
This hotel had the best location-right across the street from the town square where all the shuttles take off from. Also there is a natural food store right next door. What we didn't like was a lack of feeling like there was no owner/caretaker around at all. We were there 6 nights and saw him twice. Also the showers were so tiny my husband, 5'7" 140 pounds had a hard time turning around and raising his arms.

Wonderful Stay at Delightful Hotel

  • ReidS
  • 20 May 2012
From arrival through departure, everything about this "old school charm" hotel was wonderful. I stayed 5 nights and an out-of-state friend joined me for 3 days. Location was perfect in Bar Harbor - most scenic location in town and accessible to everywhere. Staff was very friendly, courteous, and helpful at all times. Room was very comfortable and house-cleaning staff very efficient. Our room had a patio overlooking the ocean. The hotel's Reading Room Restaurant was outstanding and offered valuable coupons for breakfast and dinner. Took advantage of off-season rates which increased value of staying there. We came to relax, hike and bike in Acadia National Park and this was a perfect location. I could feel work stress dissolve within a half hour of arrival. In over 40 years of traveling, this is the best hotel I've stayed at and will definitely return on my next visit.

Had room for two days, checked out a day early do to room condition.

  • 21 Aug 2008
When I arrived early they were still cleaning my room. Thought that would be a good thing. When we retuned about 7ish, check in lady was very nice, we then went to our room. It did not appear that allot of time was spent cleaning our room. I had to plug in lamps, light switch by the bed I had to fix so it would work. Bathroom had tiles missing around tub area. Chair at desk only had 4 of the five wheels on bottom. Desk draw had some type of liquid that I had to clean up. Our patio furniture was torn and could not be used. Our refrigerator was not clean. When checking out early the next day, I was telling the girl things that were wrong, it did not appear that it was a big deal. Or she has heard it all before. The view is breathtaking.

This is a great place for a quiet and relaxing getaway for two. The king size 4 poster bed and large jacuzzi tub was to die for and came complete with candles! The wine and cheese hour and upscale breakfast served on family china was great! The location is around the corner from the downtown area and an easy walk. I would go again.

Place is "For Sale" - Burnt out owners

  • Proper Shoes
  • 11 Aug 2011
Bad first impression: The owners had left letters for some of the guests who were arriving that day. Mine had very detailed, not-so-accommodating rules and regulations about the inn. It also included the fact that the owners could not be expected to be there to greet all guests because of the "small size" of the inn. Yes, this sounded oxymoronic to me. Shouldn't that be expected in a large inn? Then, strangely, the owners WERE there and did greet us, despite the letter. They didn't seem to have any awareness that after a 5 hour trip we might be tired and simply want to go to our room. No, instead we got a tour that consisted mostly of more rules and regulations. For example, if we wanted to use the pool, we had to give them a FIVE HOUR heads up so they could get the water up to the proper temperature! I don't know about you, but I don't want to give a FIVE hour notice to anyone about anything when I'm on vacation. But that wasn't the worst of it. Then, one of the owner's disputed the [...]price I was given, saying it was really $70+ more than the receipt I showed them. The 2nd owner AGREED WITH ME, that the price on the confirmation sheet I had was correct so then it became a domestic dispute between the two owners! They excused themselves to the next room to argue--Yes, within earshot of my traveling companion and me. It was like a late-night TV sketch. We could hear them arguing, though we couldn't make out what they were saying. Apparently, owner #1 won the battle and she reappeared, adamantly asserted that the confirmation e-mail I had was wrong and that it was $70 more. I gently questioned this one more time and then she replied, "If you aren't happy with this you are free to stay someplace else." (!!!) After we told her we had just made a 5 hour drive and that we were there to stay with friends! Needless to say, at that point, we decided to take her up on her offer to stay someplace else. We felt anything but welcome. To the owner's credit, I will say they recommended a lovely place down the road called the Bluenose Inn. We were extremely happy with the people and accommodations there. And we didn't' have to give an advance notice to use the (lovely, clean) indoor pool.I will also say that the couple who own the Chiltern Inn are probably perfectly nice people. The feeling we got was that they are simply burnt out and should no longer be in the hospitality industry. Which, again, to their credit, they possibly realize and that may be why this place is up for sale.

1960s motel quality

The location was great but the hotel was no frills. Like a motel from 1960. If the hotel quality is not a what makes your vacation the this is a good economical place.

not worth $170 per night

  • yessss
  • 15 Aug 2011
overall this hotel is livable. Room size OK, clean, perfect location in town. However for 170 bucks per night, we don't even have shampoo, not to mention hair drier, fridge or coffee pot. The bed must be pretty old since it made a lot noise. The smell of the room is ok not as bad as someone commented previously.

Scenic views, tattered room, wrong room

  • Woof Woof
  • 24 Aug 2009
Reserved a room with two double beds for myself (I'm a mom) and my 15 year old son. Hotel only had a room with one queen bed. Wound up with my son on a thin mattress on the floor the first night. Room was located up a long dark staircase next to the owner's quarters, not in the regular hotel. Hotel did offer double beds and a slightly reduced rate for the second night. Upon check in, hotel stated that Orbitz does not keep an accurate inventory of their rooms, hence the unavailability of the room we reserved. I felt as if this hotel put Orbitz customers at the bottom of their priority list. While this hotel has a great location, it would probably be best to reserve directly rather than through Orbitz, as communications between Orbitz and the hotel don't seem to work very well.

Cheap accomodations, so don't pay a lot.

Glad to find it was conveniently located exactly 2 miles from the Acadia park entrance. It is right on Route 3, but nicely set back off the road, so you hear NO traffic. Nice to see a 2-driveway entrance. Beautiful water view. Unfortunately, my next-door neighbor snored, and the walls were so thin, I couldn't sleep, even with ear plugs. The bath towels were tiny and thin. Bring your own if you like a good towel! Mini-fridge, no microwave.

Although it was a good trip, some of the things could have made it better. Like providing Microwave in the room, The Faucet in the bathroom was leaking.

The location was near a lot of tourist spots so this was convenient. The staff were friendly and lent me a hair dryer to use. :)
