Dirty, dirty, dirty...

I will admit that I did not do enough research on the location and ended up a farther distance from Hart Plaza where I was traveling from each day during Movement/DEMF. The cab prices were un-metered and ran anywhwhere from $15-$30 each way. Anyhow, my arrival at the hotel was quick and the front desk was very nice, cracking a few jokes with my as I checked in. The surroundings indicated the hotel may have once seen it's glory days in the 80's and was very apparent it is long overdue for an update, let alone a good cleaning. Once up to my room everything seemed pretty standard for a hotel of this age and condition, but I was a little concerned of the suspicious red stain in betwween the beds (room 522 if anyone is reading this). I looked past this as I was there to work and would be mostly of the room. I was sharing the room with a buddy and I've got to say that as guys we looked past many things of this room. I would not have stayed in this room if I had my girlfriend with me. My friend dropped something on the floor and when he knelt down to retrieve it, he noticed eaten pizza crusts under the bed that had not been picked up. This immeditately swayed me not to loog any further in other areas, as I did not want any surprises. Luckily for me, I spent most of my time at my friends hotel at the great located and MUCH CLEANER Doubletree, and only returned to the St. Regis for a shower and change of clothes. I will not ever stay here again... and yes, this is what I got for the price.. shame on me. I have to note one thing that was great: On Friday 5/24 I returned in the late afternoon to nap and refresh before heading out in the evening. My buddy and I went to the bar and had great conversation with the bartender. She was so nice and told us about thing to do and places to eat while in Detroit. I wish I remember her name because she deserves somme recognigtion. There was also a pianist and a lounge singer which were incredibly talented and a true testament to the soul and history of Detroit music. Hats off to you guys!

Great hotel, beautiful buliding and location, great price. The only issues I had were that there was no parking, and the air conditioner barley worked. It was like sleeping in a sweat box. With that being said the bed was comfy and I would stay there again, I would just remember to bring a fan :)

Excellent overnighter!

We we only in town for a couple days, but we were really glad we went with the St. Regis. We didn't take advantage of everything (like the hotel restaurant), but the price and service were great, it's just around the block from the Fisher Theatre and the building was a cool attraction in itself. I saw a few other comments saying the location wasn't great or that they were unhappy paying for parking, but you can't expect to stay in the city without $ for parking or a few vagrants and this IS downtown Detroit. There is a ton of renovation and re/construction going on right now in the city, too, and it's really cool to be so close to such a huge revitalization project. Some of the streets still really need repair, but this is great place to stay if you need a cool, affordable place to check out downtown and visit some of the shops/attractions.

Oldie, but goodie.

This hotel was built in 1966 as the most expensive hotel in Detroit... and it shows. They try for the old world glitz and glamor, but fall a bit short where it counts. The staff is amazingly helpful, the lobby looks awesome, and the food in the lounge is quite good. However, the rooms look a bit weathered and aged. The furniture was modern, but with faded fabric. The bathroom had updated fixtures, but an old tub/toilet. On the plus side, I didn't pay much for the room and I feel it was worth what I paid. The hotel is a 5 minute cab ride from downtown Detroit, which is nice, but has very little to offer right beside it.

Disgusting!

It's a shame that this review has to be a negative one. I travel often and am very particular about hotels I stay in. I look for cleanliness over luxury. OMNI hotels never let me down. The front desk folks are wonderful, the building itself is beautiful and old world and the food in the restaurant was great. The problems start and stay in the room. They are disgusting. I didn't realize until late into the evening that the toilet had not been cleaned. It was so brown that the maintenance worker didn't think it was cleanable. The bathtub had hair in it before I stepped into it. A toothpick under the bed entered through my shoe into my big toe and there was a dirty tissue in the garbage can. While housekeeping was there I asked for them to change the sheets because they were so wrinkled, he said they always look like that. How can you tell when they are clean I asked? He became annoyed with me. I stayed because he disinfected the toilet in my presence. Why move into another room and not know what I would get there? At the end of checkout while looking for something that dropped on the floor, I found a wallet. Not mine and I was the only one in the room. Must off belonged to a prior guest. I left it on the window sill and informed housekeeping. Two friends that were sharing a room across from me had to move because the room was like a sauna. They were told the air conditioning was broken in the hotel, meanwhile in my room I had to cover myself with more clothes because it was too cold. I went to help another friend to her room and it smelled like a bowel movement. It's just a nasty place. Forgot to mention the stains on the curtains right next to the bed. You cannot walk around the neighborhood. Not safe and you need a cab to go to the nearest decent restaurant outside the hotel. Never again. Too bad. The employees are such great folks.

Good value, difficult location

This hotel from Detroit's glory days represents a good value. The rooms are large and comfortable, the staff friendly and helpful. The problem comes down to location. There's nothing that you can walk to and straying very far at all puts you in no man's land. With a car you should be fine. Downtown is only about three miles away, the magnificent Detroit Institute of Arts, half that far. Cabs seem few and far between in Detroit, busses unpredictable. The hotel would do well to have a shuttle running hourly down Woodward Avenue.

Good value and location

Previous reviews had left me somewhat hesitant about this hotel, but everything was perfect. The only problem I had was no wifi reception in my original room. They immediately moved me, so it worked out, but that would be something to check into before finalizing a reservation if internet access is vital. Limited room service hours, but the food was decent. Customer service was fine, not at all like it was reviewed by others.

Staff Blew it for me

Checked in late, left early. I wasn't requiring much, just a decent location. First glance, the room was aesthetically pleasing. I had no reason to hate it. YET! The TV remote didn't work, they sent another that didn't work either. Then I called back to get someone to come up, he played with it for 5mins and said he didn't know how to fix it. I went to sleep anyway. Even hotels that I would never stay at have working tv's. THE DEAL BREAKER!!!! After awakening to leave, and putting my things away I got a BIG surprise. There was a huge purple toenail IN THE BED!!!! I slept all night next to a disgusting broken toenail. The worst part was when I checked out I was waiting for the woman to ask about my stay so I could unload but she didn't even ask! So I had to awkwardly bring up that I had bad experience, and explain I couldn't really sleep without a tv also. She looked discussed, but offered nothing to compensate me or make thing better. I left disappointed, and will hope nobody stays here untill they do a complete management overhaul!

St. Regis Hotel..... Never again!

I booked the room one week before, and when I went to check in my reservation was not there..... AT ALL. I had to show proof of my purchase from my e-mail (thank goodness WIFI). They finally gave a room on the second floor, and there was no hot water. The heat did not work, a man on the front desk morning shift was rude, and etc. They offered no room service for the price it cost to rent a room there, or even a morning newspaper, so the staff recommend we walk to the liquor store to purchase one. The only good parts were that the pillows were fluffy , and the windows opened. This experience is one I hope I never have t go through again! The St. Regis Hotel gets a 0 star rating from me, but I have to give it 1 star because it will not let me post this review.

Good Location, Good Enough Accomodation, Great Price

I would definitely stay here again. Staff was friendly and got us whatever we needed. Be aware that it is a $28 overnight charge for your car to park. We stayed 2 nights and were charged only the $28, probably because we didn't get it out of the lot the whole time. There is a $7 valet parking fee, but we were not charged this ... again I think because we just left the vehicle where it was. It's a $8-$10 cab ride to Ford Field and Tiger's Stadium, so all in all it's worth it. Great value!

affordable clean accomodation, but TERRIBLE location

I just got back from my trip to Detroit and I had stayed at Hotel St. Regis for 1 night. Thankfully it was just one night. The hotel is quite an old architecture and is located in a neighborhood that appears to be quite shady. I arrived on a Sunday and found the neighborhood to be deserted. Although the hotel is located not very far from Downtown, I was terribly disappointed to know that there was only one eatery across the street. I went around the block trying to look for a decent place to eat or order my food from, but found it hard to believe that near a bug hotel like that, there was one fast food store (Happy pizza) and a Chinese take out place. None of them seemed to be decent places to eat. I saw plenty of suspicious looking people walking around (people who looked like they had doped and drunk for days). Gleefully, the city Police Department is a block away. The only saving grace was a CVS phramacy from where I ended up getting chips and soda for lunch. The hotel menu is terrible. As far as the rooms are concerned, they were clean, beds were comfortable. I am saying beds because in the room I was initially assigned, the conditioner started making a noise and I could not sleep further. So I called the front desk person who told me that he would send someone to my room. After waiting for about 30 minutes, I went downstairs to ask if someting could be done about it. I was surprised when her said "Is it still making noise?" and I thought to myself, "You said you'd send somebody and now you expect the conditioner to get fixed by itself?" Then he quickly assigned me to another room and called someone to accompany me to the room to make sure everything in the room was OK. The other room was alright, but I was surprised that not a single word of apology was mentioned for the inconvenience caused. The hotel looked desserted and at night in the lobby (when I went down to report the conditioner making noise), I heard the sound of glass being shattered (as if someone was repeatedly banging a heavy glass object with a hammer) at 2-3 minute intervals from the "private party room" the whole time I waited in the lobby. There were no lights on in that room. The front desk person went inside the room and brought back someone else with him and that person quietly went and sent down in the lobby waiting area. It felt a little strange! 2 positive things: They let me check in earlier than the hotel check in time and check out a little after the check out time. Hence I give a 3-star rating. Bottom line: Plus - Clean rooms and spacious bath rooms; Minus - Old building, malfunctioning/non-functioning gadgets in rooms, poor location with very shady activities in and around the premises, poor options for dining, personnel can improve on courtesy

st regis needs some tlc...

I was first concerned when we pulled up in the parking lot and there was a handwritten note on paying. Then, our room had 2 double beds..I called to desk and the "desk guy" told me "that's all we have,we are booked, and you got what you ordered online" in a very ugly tone. I don't remember if I had a preference, but I know I would have chosen for a king bed for myself and husband. Then I also asked how to turn the air down(it was 72 degrees outside and raining). I like to control the temp because I am a cold natured person. The "desk guy" told me someone will be up there...that never happened. I had to put the 2nd bed pillows in front of the vent, by sitting them on top of the chair. Also the ironing board cover was ripped in several spots and dirty. I would not refer anyone else

Nice renovations but still lacking

I stayed at this hotel because it is near Wayne State University, where I attended the conference. The newly renovated rooms are nice and the bed is comfortable. The staff is friendly. However, there are major problems with this hotel: We did not have hot water; the elevator did not work; there is no coffee shop or snack bar on the premises and nothing within walking distance. The room also does not have a fridge or microwave, and they only give one packet of coffee, which is enough for one person but not two.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

If you stay at this hotel, bring your own snacks because there is no coffee shop or any type of convenience store within walking distance. This area of Detroit is pretty dead.

welcome

I found this hotel on [...]and it was a great deal. my trip to downtown was a $6.00 cab ride. this hotel had all I wanted except for a pool and that was ok to live without.

Convenient Getaway

The Hotel is quite beautiful and many of the staff were exceptional. I would suggest someone stay there, with the following things in mind. The stay would have gotten a four-star rating from me, but for a few things that may have just been situational, but ultimately didn't make it an excellent experience for me. In a few instances (yes, more than one) I either didn't get help after having called to the front desk or it took them a long time to assist me. This is likely due to staffing issues. They also gave me the wrong times for the gym down the street (hotel guests get free passes) - so I went and it was closed. However, when I did go the next day - it was a very nice facility.[...]

Meh

Despite what [...]says, the hotel has mandatory valet ($14 overnight, $7 for visit). A couple of the light fixtures in the room were not working. The taxi service the hotel uses has a tendency to take advantage of hotel guests. Otherwise, the room was very similar to a cheap motel at a much higher price. It is in a run down area but is just a few minutes from down detroit.I would not plan to go to this hotel again.

We've got a way to go...

The intent is there but all sorts of little things don't work yet - hot water takes forever to come up, no glasses in the room, no vending machines in the hall, no coffee shop, spectacular work out facility but two-three blocks away, no screens for the windows (a/c hadn't been turned on yet), etc.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Midtown Detroit is coming back but it will take awhile. However, certain facilities grace the neighborhood - the William Clay Ford Athletic Medicine facility is wonderful. It has not only great equipment but also technicians to help you focus on good health.

to fancy for hotel

The hotel lobby and inside was nice.. the room had its nicks and cracks but overall was a nice room. loved that we had a window that slid open to view a state building was nice to have that. no fridge or ice machine.. and no parking. had to pay 21 dollars to park and have valet do it. plus a tip. should have spent the 20 i spent on parking for a closer to down town hotel room.. we left the window open as it was a nice night and were awoke to a lot of yelling. however comfy bed and liked that it had a dvd player in room.

basic stay

The rooms were very nice. The hot water nor the iron worked in the first room they assisned to us. They switched us to another room that had no iron at all. the switch took about an half hour and the iron took another 20mins. The customer service there is terrible. but the beds are comfortable and the rooms are nice.

Not so good

Not being from Detroit, didn't know that hotel was a weekend social club. People were partying all night in the halls and elevators. Still going at 5am. Room was dirty. especially the bathroom. Elevators were full of food containers. Was not a good experience over all.

Good place to stay if you want

Good place to stay if you want to visit Wayne State University which is just 2 mins drive away from the hotel. The hotel's van service was nice enough to drop me off at the main campus. Room was clean and TV had variety of channels. Room service was excellent. Wifi was complimentary but internet was slow or sometimes hard to catch. That wasnt a problem because I just went downstairs in the main lobby to check my mail. I would definitely recommend it to people, especially visiting students of Wayne State Uni.
