Good Hotel...shuttle not so much

Attending a conference hosted by Mayo Clinic On arrival there was a large group checking in, which was fine however one of the front desk clerks needs to consider another line of work. His two counterparts were easily processing 5 check ins to his 1, I know because I patiently waited in his line while others left from behind me to go to one of the other two lines, 37 minutes and he only processed 1. Kudos to the other two front desks clerks. After 10hrs of travel I expected a bit more when I asked about dining options after I arrived. Had to call twice before I was offered a delivery menu I discovered existed when I did an internet search on my Blackberry. The bellman brought one up after the second inquiry. Would have expected it to be offered in the information binder in the room. The shuttle service seemed more in keeping with lesser rated hotels. The driver on arrival chained smoked for 20 minutes outside the van and when he entered the van the smell caused me to use my inhaler. On departure I was expecting the same shuttle service(not a shuttle dedicated to Marriott), but a Yellow Cab van arrived. I was waiting in the lobby lounge. He asked if I was waiting for the shuttle, I said yes and he walked away. He nor the Bellman made any attempt to assist me with my luggage or the door. Needless to say the only tip I had for him was my departure. The internet access was complicated I suspect due to the vicinity of the Mayo Clinic. I found it shocking it was not complimentary. As my conference ran 7am till 6pm to pay for a full 24hrs when you can only reasonably use it for 4 hrs a day if one wanted to sleep or enjoy the city and fellow colleagues. My advice to Marriott is that first impressions are cruicial, rethink allowing a chain smoking shuttle service be the first people to greet your guest. Additionally a rude, non-seatbelt wearing cab driver, speeding in less than a 8th of mile visibility, seeing your guests "safety" on their way, requires a rethink as well. The food service provided during the conference was exceptional. Compliments to all from the kitchen staff to the servers, they provided the service I have come to expect from at a Marriott property.
