Switched.............But that's OK!
I did not intend on staying at the El Cortez, but the Gold Spike, which I originally booked, was sold and closed down three days before my arrival. The El Cortez was a very nice place. Although not as inexpensive as the Gold Spike, it was still the best deal on Fremont Street. I've already booked another trip to the place.

A bit of a disappointment
My experience was a little disappointing in that I asked for a non-smoking room and although it was marked non-smoking, it did smell strongly of cigarettes. They also ran out of hot water for my shower one morning around 8:15. That was the clincher that brought me to the front desk to also let them know the remote for the T.V. was broken. I had left a note on the dresser for the housekeeper, but nothing was changed until I reported it myself and by the time I returned later that night it was replaced. I didn't expect the a five star hotel, but did hope to have a room that was smoke-free , clean and in working order.

bad hotel
I had made it for my husband Joe Vargas. He had stay there 5or 6 times. This time the had him in a small room with no safe n all kind of little kids running around at all hours. The desposit hold on card w had been $50.00 the three times he had stay there. This time it was $120.00. They said it was a mastercharge debit card that why. He's use the same card on all previous visit at $50.00. They have always put him the towers this time he was put in the pavillion. Thank you Joe n Delores Vargas

Great Hotel for the price
Paid about 40. a night for this room right off Fremont Street. Walking distance to all the bars and Casino's in Down Town Vegas. Room was clean and had a nice view of down town. Only bad thing for me since I love the jacuzzi and a swimming pool is that there is none. Other than that great stay.

so-so place
I was a bit disappointed in the room, it looked very outdated and old and some of the areas didn't look like they had been cleaned properly (like there was a lot of buildup on the edges of the shower door/frame). The water temperature fluctuated while I took a shower, too, which I haven't experienced in any other hotel/motel that i've stayed at in the US. and the blankets were very thin so I was cold (but i get cold easily so that might not bother some people). However, you get what you pay for. For the price, I would say it was as it should have been expected maybe a little below (i went on a weekend when rates are higher everywhere). Definitely not as good as some of the other hotels that i've stayed at on the main part of the strip. I wouldn't stay here again simply because I feel like there are better values out there. 2 positives are that the area had a sort of nostalgic feel to it, and the staff was friendly.

Nice stay!!
I stayed in this hotel with my boys for the first time. We were in town for a wedding and needed a last minute place with a reasonable price. I didn't want to stay on the strip due to the business and resort fees. This hotel has NO resort fees! We booked a room on the pavilion level, but when we got to our room I was not satisfied with the condition (older room, needed some TLC). I contacted the front desk, and they immediately moved us to the tower with no problem and no additional charge. Our new room was wonderful, great view, clean and spacious. The staff was wonderful, very nice and helpful! The parking garage was a little out of the way, you had to go through the casino a ways to get to the elevators. Once we discovered valet, it was wonderful! So all around we had a very nice stay and I would use the El Cortez again!!
