Wonderful experience!!

I really had a wonderful experience! The hotel has a cool vibe with wooden floors, lofted ceilings and dark wooden furniture. The rooms and bathrooms were HUGE and VERY clean! I have paid much more for other hotels in Philly and have gotten much less. The location is great (just two blocks from Broad St). And you get free access to the 12th Street Gym!! NOT just a lame hotel fitness center...but a complete gym!

Surprising City, Surprising Hotel

We had our doubts heading to Philadelphia for vacation purposes, but wanted to see the city's historic side. Both the city and the Independent Hotel were wonderful surprises. I wasn't expecting much given the what we paid, and I wouldn't go so far as to say it was luxurious, but it was definitely comfortable, clean, and doesn't have the "sameness" like many hotel chains, which was nice. I'd put the Independent in the same category as Kimpton boutique hotels, which I also enjoy. The nightly wine and cheese reception was a nice touch, the bathroom and room (king) were great sizes, and the staff was friendly. The breakfasts (complimentary and delivered to the room) were nothing spectacular, but more than adequate with a nice selection. The location was great for our purposes (walking to historical sites, MFA, Pat's King of Steaks!) and it has great access to public transportation. We had a great stay!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

I loved the Continental Midtown restaurant (a Starr restaurant)! A very fun dining experience. And I'd vote for Pat's Kind of Steaks over Geno's. The walk wasn't terrible, but not very exciting, and I definitely wouldn't do it at night time - I'd take a cab and then walk back because you'll be stuffed! Khyber Pass Pub has a great selection of craft beers.

Nice Hotel

In a beautiful area! The rooms are big, the people very friendly! The fridge in the room and the AC are too loud! Nice to have free breakfast delivered to your room, better if there was a table to have it... I would return to this place on my next trip to Philly!

Great boutique hotel

My partner and I have stayed here twice for business in the Philadelphia area. This place offers a good rate, great location (walk everywhere) and very nice rooms. Breakfast could use some work.

The Independent Hotel

The hotel advertises breakfast included. That is misleading. There is no restaurant so nothing fresh and only yogurt, out of season fruit, and packaged muffins. Better to have nothing and no false advertising. This is a basic (boutique only in the sense of being 24 rms) hotel with no services and no frills. Which is fine but the advertising would lead you to expect more.

Excellent intimate upscale comfortable

Small boutique hotel in a great location. Well trained and motivated staff are friendly, informative and helpful. Decor is much nicer than my home, yet still comfortable. Maybe the price is slightly higher that a few other hotels in the area, but certainly not the most expensive. I think it's a bargain, for the service and comfort. Snacky breakfast delivered outside your door in the morning. My room would have been really great for a couple looking for romance!

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Great fun nightclubs, bars and dining places within one or two blocks. Helpful hint, the 2010 Gayborhood guide shows this hotel on the wrong side of the street. GPS finds it easily. Hotel lets you park in front for a half hour while you check in & unload. Then park at the place the hotel recommends. It's very cheap for Philadelphia and has 'in & out' privileges.

Independent Hotel Philadelphia, Pa

I have traveled for business and pleasure for over thirty years. I rank this hotel as one of the worst in which I have stayed. There have been worse, but I knew that checking in. This hotel billed itself as something special and we were hoping for that. Instead, the hotel is extremely noisy. The rooms, while nicely decorated lacked functional items such as night stands. The continental breakfast was below that of a economy hotel.

My fav new hotel in Philly!

This hotel was a really pleasant surprise. I had read some great reviews here and even then, it exceeded my expectations. The Independent is in a great location - close to restaurants, nightlife and shopping. The entrance is interesting - you walk through the door and have to take an elevator up to lobby. The good thing is after 10pm, you need a key to get into the entrance. The staff at the front desk were great - really friendly and helpful. They also have these wine and cheese receptions in the lobby for those who are interested. The rooms were amazing - spacious, modern, clean. Great bathrooms, with a double shower head, lots of towels and also spacious. I've been telling all my friends about it. Highly recommended!
