The centerpiece of Philadelphia's Avenue of the Arts, The hotel is located at Ten Avenue of the Arts in the landmark Girard trust Company Bank Rotunda and Tower. Originally built as The Girard Trust Company and home to the Girard Bank. McKim, Mead and White, who are also known for Boston's Symphony Hall, Columbia University and the Washington Square Arch in New York, designed the building between 1901 and 1904. Actual construction took place between 1905 and 1909. The tower was further modified in the 1930s. The current design merges past and present with elegance and sensitivity and has been completely renovated to suit the needs of today's traveler.

Favorite Center City hotel

great location, a WOW lobby bar, very comfortable rooms, great help from the valet to housekeeping and everyone in between. My only quibble is the so called upgrade.... OK, it's a slightly bigger room, but don't sell it like it's the penthouse.

Where's the restaurant??

The staff at the front desk was fantastic, but the hotel is not up to the standards of other Ritz Carltons that I have stayed at. The pool is 2 blocks away at another location, and since our travel was in January, we didn't want to walk 2 blocks in the cold with wet hair, and coats to take a swim. A disappointment. The hotel does not have a "nice" restaurant. The main restaurant is located in the middle of the lobby, which is a huge open atrium and mainly serves lounge-type food on low couches with coffee tables. The menu is extremely limited, but the food was good. At the far end of the room, there are some tables that are regular height, but that section always seemed to be closed, with the exception of Sunday breakfast. The night we were there, a wedding took over the lobby/restaurant, and there was no place else to eat at the hotel, other than ordering room service. I repeatedly asked if there was another restaurant on site at the hotel, and was told no. The decor of the lounge/restaurant was also tacky. Not up to the standards of elegance that I have experienced at other Ritz Carltons. The concierge was nice, but not well connected. He got us a reservation at a local Italian Trattoria, the only place he said he could get us a table at on a Saturday(even though we ate early, and could be gone in less than an hour) but it wasn't that good. Average at best. Certainly not the kind of restaurant I would say "go to" if this was your only night in Philadelphia. Our room -- a standard King -- was great -- very comfortable, beautiful view, and clean windows! Nice bathroom with a roomy shower, and nice marble. The room had a king bed, a desk, dresser, 2 nightstands, TV, and 1 chair. We paid $300, about what I would expect at a Ritz. Again, the front desk staff- and all the staff couldn't have been better. They were extremely welcoming, and kind; although they didn't know as much as they should have about the local historical sites. I did better looking up information myself on websites. [...] overall we had a nice stay -- but the lack of a nice restaurant is a big negative. Also there is no gift shop, and no Disney Channel!

Recommended but not all they promise...

The Ritz is definitely good, but for a supposedly 5 star joint it sure has small rooms. Our "deluxe" room had only beds, a desk, TV stand, and one chair. There was no place to sit and relax. The bathroom on the other hand was huge, nice, and well..overkill. Parking was $50/day before you tip the valets even though nearby lots (even right on Rittenhouse Square) were $12/day on weekends. On Saturday night we came back to the Ritz at around 1:30am and wanted a nightcap at the bar...no way. They sent us away saying they were closed. Never mind the rest of the city was still buzzing with nightlife. Last call in Philly is 2am. When I mentioned the above in the checkout survey, I got a call from management who seemed genuinely concerned and listened to me. They comped our parking and said they'd take our other critiques under advisement. On the good side, the staff was overall good. Some of the newer ones perhaps a little untrained. We had great experiences with concierge and reception and the staff we passed in the halls...it's a friendly place for sure. The hotel atrium is breathtakingly beautiful and historic. The location is pretty good, and we felt like the room rate we paid was good even considering the small problems. Overall I'd say it's a good place, but to compete among the high end Philly hotels, I think they're going to need to do a little better. We were real happy at the Philly Loews the time before...and rates are the same. We'll surely try something new next time.

Nightlife tip: Long walk from hotel

The Pub and Kitchen on Lombard St. for scene, drinks, and food. The Artful Dodger pub on Headhouse Square for local brews and solid appetizers.

Awesome Stay at The Ritz Carlton!

We toured historic Philadelphia via horse/carriage ride, shopped, visited the Italian market, LOVE park, saw Taylor Swift in concert at Wachovia Arena, dined at exquisite restaurants both in the hotel and nearby.
