hotel was clean, service was good. Downside was that I could hear most all the traffic since it is adjacent to a bus stop. Fair value but no frills

Not perfect but worth the price
The rooms in this property are large, clean and comfortable. It is near the riverwalk yet a little aff the beaten path. I wouldn't expect to eat and drink there but for the price it is a value and there is lots of places to eat and drink nearby. The staff was very nice and friendly.

hotel was fine, food was pathetic
Don't park a car here because the rates are ridiculous. You have a fridge in the room but there are no stores nearby. You have to walk several blocks to a liquor store that has some incidental groceries that are expensive, because you are downtown. The breakfast was okay. They had waffles one morning, but why was the waffle maker unavailable most other days? Eggs every morning but they tasted strange, I suspect powedered eggs. But not like Orlando where they had grits or hot oatmeal, as well as waffles every morning, and instant packets of oatmeal and dry cereal. This one had coffee, orange juice and skim milk for the dry cereal. The light dinner was the worst I have ever had at a Homewood Suites. One night they had canned corn, cold breadsticks, no butter, tough pepper steak which was frankly so full of gristle it was mostly inedible. The rice pilaf advertised was gone and not replaced wtihin the first 30 minutes. When asked about the missing rice pilaf, the lady in charge said "If you don't like it, tell the manager." Another night was supposed to be meatloaf with instant mashed potatoes. Is that so difficult to prepare? Dry, with no gravy or ketchup, it looked more like mystery meat with little rubber balls in it.I didn't know it was supposed to be meatloaf until I saw that was how it was listed on my refrigerator door. There was salad one night with two types of dressing. That was a highlight. They had frozen margaritas, beer, red and white wine. If you are interested in drinking your dinner, this is the place for you. In Baltimore their food at Homewood suites was actually good, with abundant choices. The food although not great every night in Orlando usually included a salad or soup so that if you didn't care for their main course, you could have something and then go out to supplement it at a restaurant. We were so tired on the day we arrived that we didn't feel like going far to find dinner. So we ate their food twice and were disappointed twice. This hotel is in downtown so there is a vast wasteland around it of office buildings. You can go up to Riverwalk at the mall area and find some chain restaurants but those restaurants are expensive for lunch. I don't think $15 for one hamburger is reasonable. We did find an area of town a few blocks up that is supposed to be an artistic area for shops where we found a Mexican restaurant that had a $5.55 lunch special of the day. You could pick from about 6 things as the special. You had to ask for the special menu because they did not offer it. But there was one sign that said lunch specials M-F lunch specials $5.55. These lunches which we ate there twice during our stay were great for the price and comparable to what we paid. At another place where I didn't even like the food as well we paid $20 each for lunch plate of Mexican food. Hope you like Mexican; that is mostly what they have in this town. The people are nice, and we rode the bus and trolley. People will tell you its only two blocks, but believe me though it is flat, they are long city blocks. I looked at the weather report. It was supposed to be 70 during the day and 40 at night. I packed accordingly. It turned cold and the wind was terrific so walking four or six blocks to get somewhere was not easy with only a light jacket. We have often chosen Homewood Suites because of the included dinner, but this particular one did just barely enough to be able to call it a dinner, and compared to the Homewoods in Orlando and Baltimore, I would have to call it "pathetic." We will rethink using Homewood if others serve food this poor and unsatisfactory and stingy.

Fun family getaway
The room was perfect and spacious. The location was ideal and made all our riverwalk excursions easy. We enjoyed all the restaurant choices and liked being close to both the Alamo and the movies. The rooftop pool and hot tub made for a perfect and relaxing end to our days.

Family Reunion
This was one of the worst experiences that I have ever had at a hotel. I had booked a two bedroom suite with one king size bed and 2 double beds. I was given one king size bed and one double bed! We were very crowded, so my stay at the Hilton was not a good experience.

Good Times in San Antonio
Normally when we go to San Antonio, which we do several times a year, we stay at a hotel farther away from the Riverwalk because these are generally less expensive. However, this trip, we had friends visiting with us and wanted to enjoy the full Riverwalk experience, our favorite San Antonio highlight. We loved the classic exterior of the hotel and how it is ideally located near all the action. We also loved the suites because we could put our two young children in another room and still have fun with our friends. I was disappointed that there was no on-site parking, especially since the wording of the description of the hotel seemed to imply there was. The free breakfast was great, especially for children. I would likely stay there again.

Old hotel - but nice & great location
We were expecting a newer hotel & our first impression was "OH NO!!" But after getting settled and figuring out our location to the river walk & for the price we paid, we decided that it was a good deal. The place was clean, and very roomy - a suite - not just a bedroom. Two TV's - which was nice - and a kitchen area. The complimentary breakfast was also a nice feature. We did not have a river walk view - but could see a lot of the city from the ninth floor. Great views from the rooftop - where the pool (although small) is. This is a perfect place for a family to stay!

Take the river tour - it shows you where everything is and is very informative. Best to take it in the morning or early afternoon hours - they get very busy later in the day. Try to get [...]- he has a great sense of humor!!

On the quiet part of the Riverwalk!
This hotel is on the quiet part of the riverwalk, but less than a third of a mile from the Hilton, numerous restaurants and boat tours. The room was large (a suite) and had a kitchenette w/ full refrigerator in case you wanted to cook instead. Very convenient and comfortable.

More parking was needed for non-valet parkers, bell hop was never on location when you needed him. Hotel had great view of Riverwalk and right across the street was the fabulous International Center.

In Hotel
Assure you open door to your room slowly. In some rooms the wall or partition wall is placed right behind door knob and if opened too fast it makes hole in wall which the hotel charges $50 to repair. They must get a lot of people with that wall, cause hole looked like it had been re-patched over and over!

The people were exceptionally friendly
The Homewood Suites was under renovation when we got there and throughout our four night stay. The hotel staff was almost fanatical about making up for this inconvenience with service. If you ask a question they take time to fully answer the question, way beyond other hotels we've been to. Their breakfast (provided every morning) was quite good. Their manager's special provided in the evening Monday through Thursday was essentially a meal with free wine, mahrgaritas (sp?) and beer. we never ate out during those evenings. The cook also prepared food for the school system as her other job. It was very good. The hotel is right next to the Riverwalk, but not at it's most active part. I prefer this as it is a little quiet, but was close enough to the main part of the riverwalk to easily walk there. For those that want to be right in the middle of things, this might be a negative. I recommend that you ask for any help you need. They love to help. One of the highlights for us was our walk down the riverwalk to the historic part of town (King Willam Street I think). Have lunch at the Guenther house before or after you tour the Steeves House in that district. The Guenther house is located right at the end of the riverwalk (on the actual river part not the commercial part) on Guenther Street.

Short walk from hotel
One thing we learned was the riverwalk is essentially two parts. The best known is a loop that winds between hotels and shops and restaurants. This loop is fed by the actual river, but was created as an attraction for the World's Fair. The actual river part also has sidewalks down by the river that streach for a few miles. Many of the hotels are located on this part of the riverwalk and probably advertise that they are on the riverwalk. However, to get to the active part of the loop would require a long walk or water taxi to get there. The Homewood Suites is located on the loop but near the actual river, a relatively short walk to the active part.
