Great bargain in the mountains

I simply needed a place to relax for a few days, and they had an Internet special that was unbeatable. It is a little ways to drive up, but well worth it because it is quiet and peaceful. Staff is super friendly and attentive. Well stocked breakfast buffet served promptly at 8am every morning.

An economical and friendly stay.

clean, quiet & comfortable. We were a half hour early for the buffet, however, there was no objection to our having a cup of coffee and sitting in the buffet room. Would stay there again.

Wonderful weekend!

The Northern Lights Lodge is a very friendly and welcoming place to stay. The poster who had problems with the "management" must have problems wherever he/she goes. The owner couldn't be more friendly or accommodating. He made all sorts of recommendations for restaurants, which we thought were right on. He is very friendly and will chat as you run into him around the lodge. The lodge is older and the rooms are fairly rustic, though with A/C and cable and WiFi...I guess just very basic is a good description. The indoor pool area is great and there is game room upstairs with air hockey, ping pong, and a few video games. There is also an outdoor pool but it wasn't yet open for the season during our stay. The lodge has wonderful landscaping everywhere! The breakfast area is very nice, with great food. We were there for three nights and had a different breakfast each day. Every day there is cereal, breads, homemade muffins, scrambled eggs, and homefries, and then a changing meat (bacon once and sausage twice) and a changing starch (blueberry pancakes, waffles, french toast). Three kinds of juice, coffee, tea, milk. Very attentive breakfast help. Homemade cookies and lemonade in the afternoons. The location is also fantastic, just about exactly 1/2 way between the ski areas (where Smuggler's Notch pass and the auto toll road are) and the main Stowe town area. The first impression is that the hotel is older and the rooms aren't fancy, but after being there a few hours, you really start to appreciate the charm. I would certainly send friends and family there....

personal attention

Arrived late at night. We were upgraded to a suite that could have slept 6 for the three of us. Each teen therefore had his own bed so there was no fighting. Had a mini kitchen with everything needed for cooking and eating. It is only 10 minutes from the mountain so we would have lunch there, saving considerably for meals. Staff was very friendly, gave us tips on where to eat and shop, made fresh scrambled eggs for breakfast. Would definitely go back.

Food was the best thing about it

The Lodge was ok, but kind of disappointing. The lodge is quite close to the road and the rooms facing the road are loud and not conducive to sleep. More light blocking curtains would improve the situation. The whole place had a bit of a musty smell. The best thing about the place was the staff who were quite friendly and the food was good. Wonderful buffet breakfast and the cookies and lemonade in the lobby were a nice touch.

smelled of mildew and urine

The room smelled damp, mildewed and the bathroom smelled like an outhouse. The floor was uneven, carpet and room finish appeared unprofessional. Cracks in the corner seemed to be covered with scotch tape. The room next door was empty, and at 12 midnight the alarm went off on the clock in that room, we heard it very clearly from our room. we called the front desk, but no-one answered. The alarm fianally went off on it's own at 2am. Exhausted, we did not stay for the second nigh, and staff at Northern Lights were unhappy about that, but did not penalize us for leaving early.
