Prague- A place for everyone!
The thing that impressed me most about Prague was that as a tourist destination it caters for everyone, be it a family holiday, a stag or hens weekend, or a romantic trip for two. Below is a must-do check list for each of the above categories:
Family Holiday
If you are searching for a place to take your family then look no further. Prague is a truly spectacular city filled with mesmerising scenery, steeped in history and with an endless list of things for you and the children to enjoy.
Boat trip down the Vltava.
Children always love a boat ride and at the same time it gives you a chance to take in some of the major attractions such as Prague castle, Charles Bridge and Petrin Hill and receive a history lesson on all of them as you pass by. On a clear sunny day, a truly surreal experience not to be missed.
Charles Bridge
Another must do, but be sure to go first thing in the morning as the crowds tend to swell from mid morning and the experience is not as worthwhile. You will be entertained by a host of street musicians, mime artists and caricaturists, always a funny and interesting experience. Most importantly, however, is finding the time to really appreciate the beauty of this city and its unique architecture. Also make sure you read up on the historic significance of the bridge which has witnessed more than 600 years of processions, battles, executions and increasingly, film shoots.
Mirror maze
Atop of Petrin Hill, the mirror maze is an abundance of fun and many a laugh as you make faces, point fingers at large bellies and elongated bodies. You will definitely see a new side of yourself. A bit of light entertainment that is perfect for breaking up a day.
Puppet show
A long standing Czech tradition, book in advance for the National Marionette Theatre and enjoy a weekend presentation of a well-known fairy tale. Again, another piece of the local culture that will keep the children entertained for up to an hour.
The Astronomical Clock
A unique feature situated in the old town. Is a must see on the stroke of every hour when bells ring, cocks crow and 15th century statues dance. The clock not only tells the current time, but relates the movement of the planets around the earth, the sun and the moon through the signs of the zodiac.
A Stag do / Hens weekend
Looking for a cheap weekend, with plenty to do and see at night? Look no further! Here are my top five things to do for a weekend that you will all never forget.
Beer
Any Stag / Hens weekend involves some form of drinking and a common drink of choice is Beer which believe it or not is readily available in all shapes and sizes and is cheap as chips. There is seldom an occasion that you will have to pay any more than 80p for a pint of any draught beer so make the most of it and start early!
Food
As well cheap drinks, you can also enjoy substantial meals at next to nothing prices. Line your stomach by taking advantage of one of the many lunch counters and buffets. Grab a tray, your Czech dictionary and join the queue.
Accommodation
Look no further than Sir Toby’s Hostel, which offers bedrooms with a bathroom and kitchen at a reasonable price and they even throw in the occasional barbeque. The perfect remedy for the day after the night before! The staff can also assist in finding alternative accommodation if there are no vacancies.
Nightlife
As a Stag / Hen weekend it is imperative that there is a happening nightlife and Prague has just that. You have the choice of the new town area or the old town depending on where you are staying. Both offer numerous nightclubs however if you leave going out until late you will be hit with a cover charge in both regions. Again the bonus of cheaper drinks makes them taste even nicer.
Romantic weekend
Paris is renowned as the city of love however Prague must come in as a close second. Its unique scenery, beautiful food and the fact that it is steeped in history makes it a perfect place to take your loved one. My top five things to do are:
Boat cruise
What can be more romantic than being driven along the river Vltava sipping on a glass of wine, whilst taking in the clear blue glassy water and the magnificent Castle in the background. Then travelling up to the equally impressive Charles Bridge with an in-depth commentary by the tour guide assisting you with the historical facts.
A fantastic way to commence your stay and get the romance juices flowing.
A walk up Petrin hill
Not for the faint hearted, the walk up to Petrin Hill can leave you puffing and panting however, once you reach the top, the magical view makes it all worthwhile. Prague is such a beautiful and unique city you find yourself staring and smiling and thankful for the experience. This combined with the extensive rose gardens at the top ensures that this is a must do experience.
Prague Castle
Set up on the hilltop overlooking the river is this magnificent piece of architecture built in the 9th century. In the castle grounds you can visit the Old Royal Palace, Summer Gardens, St George’s Basilica, St George’s Convent and the White Tower. Most of this you can see free of charge, however, if you do wish to enter the castle, you will need to pay an admission fee.
Take the time to stroll down Garden Lane. This small laneway was the home to all the goldsmiths so they could avoid guild dues in town. Now you can have a look inside these houses, and purchase the wonderful handmade crafts available.
Old Town Square
As the heart and soul of the city, no romantic couple should, or is likely to miss the old town square. The city has few charms finer than watching the moon rise between the towers of the church of Our Lady before Tyn. It is also a lovely spot to take advantage of one of the numerous cafes and relax in the beautiful surroundings.
Night walk along the Vltava
No romantic break would be complete without a night stroll along a river of beautiful surroundings, and they don’t come much better than here in Prague. The Castle is lit up at night and is a site to behold, as is the Charles bridge. There is also the opportunity to take a night river cruise however if you are tight for money then a stroll is romantic enough. A truly surreal experience that will top off a memorable trip.
Well there you have it! Now all you need to do is select which category you find yourself in and then enjoy a trip that you will never forget. Upon your return you will most likely find yourself with the same predicament as I found myself, in asking myself when are my next holidays so I can revisit this magical place.
