Flying back into London today was a grand experience after being in the big Americas for what seemed like a year. As well as my 20KGs of luggage, I also brought back with me (or the aeroplane did, I should say), a whole host of Americans. It’s their turn to experience this side of the pond. What we Brits don’t always acknowledge is that the same things that take us exploring abroad, bring so many to our country.

Did you know that London attracts more international visitors in a year than New York, Sydney and Las Vegas combined? No, me neither. And places like the insatiable Covent Garden are responsible for that. Character, depth and history. The district modestly began as a small fruit and vegetable market in the 17th century and it is now the hub of tourism with street artists, shops and markets. It borders the West End, attracting theatre goers from all over, and the hotels cater for that. My next hotel, the Strand Palace, is only a two minute walk from Covent Garden and is a delightful hotel screaming its hot location. It’s quite large for a city hotel and the lobby area boasts space with two restaurants, two bars and a connected pub.

The Strand Carvery is one of London’s original carvery restaurants and displays elegance with modern furnishings. Pre-theatre restaurant, Johnston’s Brasserie, serving modern international cuisine, opens its doors to the thespians of the town. Breakfast this morning was a full English and served in the latter of the two restaurants; there was a selection of things to choose from, from my favourite fried stuff to healthier options such as fruit or wholegrain. Hot drinks were served at my table, although the service was less than adequate… service with a smile anyone? Even the hosts at the restaurant were abrupt and constantly made me feel like I was interrupting their day.

The service I received upon check in and for room service later on, was good, polite and courteous. My room was small but comfortable. It didn’t have much space for my 20KG suitcase and its contents, but perhaps as my dad would say, that’s my fault for taking 20KGs around the globe. Girls, back me up on this one!

I had my very own tea making area… love at first sight. The very first thing I did when walking into my room? Yes, you guessed it, poured myself a cuppa! The bathroom was reasonably sized although the toilet didn’t flush properly and I had to flush it around 30 times before it did anything. Come on people, I really don’t have time for that. On the bright side, my room did have everything else, a hairdryer, safe, did I mention the tea? The only thing missing was an iron, but facilities were readily available. There was access to a fitness centre, a 24hr business centre and laundry services.  Not bad for a city hotel.

The atmosphere in the lobby was alive from morning to night, it was flourishing with tourists, both from other parts of the UK and beyond. There were lots of Americans – gosh I hope they can handle the service, being used to what they are.

Just a few minutes walk from the heart of London, you can’t really complain. The location is ideal for tourists of any kind, whether they are looking to enjoy the theatre, shops or museums. The best thing about the lot is, of course, the amazing tea I found in my room, like a mirage, although I can’t imagine the Americans caring much for it. I’m off for a cuppa and then prep for my flight to Edinburgh tomorrow. Until next time guys, ciao.
