If you’re lucky enough to be taking a holiday in Peru, you’ll want to learn all there is to know about the Incas. And what better way than hiking to Machu Picchu, a 15th-century Inca site situated high in the Andes, almost 8,000ft above sea level? Discover more about this country’s fascinating history by marvelling at the Lost City of the Incas, understandably one of the most popular activities in Peru and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Hotel in Lima

Lima

To reach Machu Picchu, you’ll need to first get a flight to Lima. This impressive Peruvian city has long been dubbed the City of the Kings due to its colonial importance, and here you’ll find some of the nicest hotels in Peru. Why not spend a night or two here before carrying on towards the Inca Trail? Try the San Agustin Colonial, a modern hotel situated right near Lima’s beaches which preserves perfectly the charm and grace of this city’s ancient mansions.

Cuzco and the main site
From Lima, head to Cuzco to get closer to the architectural genius and dramatic natural beauty of the Machu Picchu site. The Terra Andina Hotel in Cuzco is a beautifully converted colonial mansion in the historic district of this town. The San Augustin El Dorado Hotel is also in a great location right near the main square and the Koricancha Temple of the Sun. You may want to check out car hire in Peru so you can make your way to Machu Picchu in your own time, or alternatively you can hook up with one of the many tour operators who will organise your trek.
