Reborn since the 1992 Olympics, a weekend in Barcelona, the Catalan capital, is one of Europe’s premium city breaks. Famous for its football, the city also embodies all the elements of the continent’s finest destinations: impressive cultural sites, beautiful beaches, fashionable shops and thriving nightlife. Flights to Barcelona are cheap so where better for a romantic Valentine’s break?

Things to do

The name Antoni Gaudi sends shivers through any architect and his work is all over the city. Explore his houses and gardens before taking in La Sagrada Familia, the church under construction since 1882. February weather might be too cold to swim but the beaches are worth a stroll, or appreciate the world’s most famous artist in the Picasso Museum before getting lost in the winding Gothic quarter.

Treat your date

The view from the Tibidabo mountain is good, but a hot air balloon ride over the city is unbeatable. Get your portraits painted on Las Ramblas or shop in the Passeig de Gracia. Admire the spectacular magic fountains of Montjuic, grab some delicious tapas and cap it all with a night at the opera.

Where to stay

There are many luxury and affordable hotels in Barcelona to choose from. The Omm Hotel Barcelona, complete with spa and swimming pool, is in one of the hippest areas and has a fine restaurant.

B-Hotel Barcelona is in tune with modern Barcelona, whilst the Acevi Villarroel is close to Las Ramblas and other hot spots. Car hire in Barcelona is easily arranged to explore further outside the city.
