Ipanema
The name ‘Ipanema’ is a Tupi Guarani (an Indian language) term for ‘dangerous waters’. Located between Leblon and Arpoador, Ipanema beach was made famous by the popular song ‘Garota de Ipanema’ by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Morais. The origins of beach fashion and the Bossa Nova rhythm can be traced all the way back to this beach. Whilst you are there, don’t forget to check out the interesting wave patterns at Ipanema’s twin beach Leblon. Here you can enjoy the chic comfort of The Hotel Praia Ipanema and rejuvenate yourself at the hotel’s beachfront spa.
Copacabana
Affectionately called the ‘Little Sea Princess’, Copacabana is located between the lifeguard watchtowers Posto Dois and Posto Seis. This serene beach is ideal for all types of water sports and is therefore a favourite with tourists. We recommend a stay at the Premier Copacabana Hotel which is close to most of the city’s major tourist attractions, or at the Promenade Visconti, a Rio de Janeiro hotel known for its charm, hospitality and comfort.
Barra da Tijuca
Barra da Tijuca is a little distance away in the south of Rio’s centre is the city’s largest beach. It has miles and miles of white sand seemingly stretching into infinity. It is ideal for a nice relaxing day in the sun or an active day spent windsurfing. This is where you’ll find most of the beautiful youngsters of Rio de Janeiro.
