A paradise for shoppers!

Forget the high street – if you’re serious about shopping, then you need to get to Morocco, where the warrens that make up the markets there are spilling over with exotic treasures and unbelievable deals. One of the best things to do in Marrakech, even if your budget is small, is to wander the labyrinth of the souk and let the sights, sounds and smells wash over you. Flights to Marrakech cost less than you’ll save on the bargains, so here’s a guide to where, how, and what to buy while you’re there.

Where to shop

Start by visiting the Complexe Artesanale on Mohammed V just to learn what you should be paying in the souk (the government fixes the prices here so this should be your limit). Then, head to the huge souk behind Jemaa el Fna square. Friday is the Muslim holy day, so most stalls close at midday.

How to Shop

Although French is always welcome, most sellers have good English. Haggling, obviously, is obligatory – you really will be expected to negotiate hard (start by offering one third of their starting price). Also, you will get lost – enjoy it, and just ask someone for the way out when you’re ready. Having some coins or sweets to give to beggars and children is a nice idea and will make you popular.

What to Buy

You’re about to discover all the things you hoped you’d find and hundreds you didn’t. If you’re there for gourmet pleasures, then fill your bags with tea, dates and spices. If you’re into home décor, then splash the cash on carpets, lanterns and woodwork, and for fashionistas, go crazy with shoes, fabric, leather goods and jewelry.

Shopped out and sound asleep

If you’re searching for great hotels in Marrakech, then there’s no better place to unwind after a long day shopping than Le Meridien N’Fis Hotel. The landscaped grounds and beautiful pool are a great place to escape from the chaos of the markets, and the in-hotel hammam is perfect for rest and recuperation.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for something more intimate and authentic, then go for Riad des Orangers; one of the best cheap hotels in Marrakech, it’s a surprising haven tucked off a small alleyway, with the most wonderful home-cooked food.
