Holidays in Acatlan

It's 110 miles to the southeast of Mexico City, the capital of Mexico.

Like to expand your horizons? Huajuapan is 35 miles to the southeast of Acatlan and Santo Domingo Tonala is 35 miles to the south. Get in the car and discover what's happening out there!

Go on an adventure and see some sights in Tehuacan. This place is 45 miles away and pretty close to the Moctezuma Monument, Hidalgo Square and Juarez Square. Of course, you shouldn't miss Tehuacan Cathedral and Carmen Church and Ex-Convent either.

Getting out and discovering the wider region doesn't get any better when your choices include activities like mountain biking and mountain climbing.

Sticking to a jam-packed travel itinerary can be trying. Why not arrange a trip into the great outdoors and enjoy a laid-back day of cycling or bird watching?

Not here for as long as you'd like to be? Signing up for a few guided nature walks, wildlife spotting tours, wildlife safaris and city walking tours will ensure you get as much as you can out of your adventure.

Holidays aren't just about resting and relaxing — they're also about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and trying different things. Add some nail-biting fun to your getaway by trying paragliding.

Take in the region's history museums and craft workshops. They are excellent places to shelter in when the rain starts bucketing down.

Clear the cobwebs from your mind at some great outdoor attractions. The surrounding area is host to a nice range of open-air museums, open-air markets and gardens.

Connect with your inner history geek by exploring the close-by ruins, traditional villages, old towns, fortresses, historic mansions and archeological sites. They're exceptional places to find out a thing or two about the region's past.

Whether or not you believe in a greater power, stopping by one or two of the surrounding churches, cathedrals and shrines is a unique opportunity to get some insight into the area's spirituality.

Credit cards? Check. Wallet? Check. But have you brought your appetite? With some fabulous food and drink to try out in this destination, it's the one thing you really won't want to leave home without.

During your time in Acatlan, you should eat like the locals do. That means tucking into a meal of mole poblano (meat with puebla sauce) or molotes (fried stuffed corn patty), a couple of the region's classic dishes.

Tortitas de santa clara (saint claire cookies) is a dessert that tells the story of this place in a single mouthful. Order a serving and then come back for seconds!

More experienced travellers usually put in some effort to learn a few words and phrases in the local tongue. Many find that being able to interact with the locals isn't just convenient, it's a lot of fun! To start with, try to get your tongue around "¡Perdón!" This translates as "excuse me". "¿Cuánto cuesta? ", which means "how much is this?", is another one you may need.

Every year on the 16th of September, Independence Day occupies a special place in the hearts and minds of the locals. It offers a wonderful chance to learn about the country's history and have a little fun while you're at it!

It's always a shame to say "Hasta la vista" to Acatlan, but don't worry, it's not going anywhere!

If you're travelling by plane, you'll likely be using Hermanos Serdan International Airport (PBC). It's 70 miles to the north. Pack up your suitcase, map a route and set your alarm clock!
