Art meets hotel, badly

Pros: Friendly helpful staff and excellent food
Cons: A list of most irritating things as long as your arm.
We stayed at Hotel Hotel (just rebranded Ovolu Nishi) for three days in March and our stay prompted me to write this report, because I must say it was a unique experience. It is a hotel that is rather like Marmite (for UK visitors) or Vegemite (for Australian visitors); you are either going to love it or hate it. This is because it was designed by someone who I guess was very much into art rather than into the practicalities needed in a hotel. It is dark inside and my wife said it felt and looked like a prison. Others will disagree, and enjoy the soft lighting throughout. The place is where art meets hotel and there will be some people who love this and some who find it irritating beyond belief. Let me give you some examples. You need a PhD to figure out what all the light switches do in the bedrooms. The toilet flush buttons are hidden behind the seat so you always need to close it to flush. The sink tap protrudes beautifully from the wall but it is nearly impossible to get the kettle underneath it to fill it. To use the sockets under the bedside table you need a torch to locate the pins as it is so dark. The wooden tray that holds the coffee mugs is beautiful but concave shaped and thus rather impractical. The walk in shower is beautifully tiled but the slope is so shallow you have to use the bathmat to dam the water and prevent it flooding the bathroom. You'd be happy to know that since the re-branding from Hotel Hotel to Ovolo Nishi that we're looking to really change-up some of the aspects of our rooms to be a bit more user-friendly without losing on that lovely bespoke feel.. from adding in some more customisable lighting options to some clearer signage overall.
