Bilbao, the capital city of the autonomous community of the Basque Country, is the economic powerhouse of northern Spain. The city’s commercial strength has long provided prosperity in the region but in recent years the city has shed its industrial image and become a popular tourist destination. There are flights to Bilbao from all over the UK, making it a fantastic destination for a weekend getaway or a perfect base for a longer holiday in one of Spain’s most beautiful regions.
Whether it’s an autumn pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago or a summertime exploration of the Basque country’s best beaches, Bilbao has something to offer visitors at any time of year. The mild oceanic climate makes for warm summers and cool winters where temperatures rarely drop below freezing. The colder months are a good time to explore Bilbao’s indoor attractions, such as the Guggenheim Museum, while admiring the snow-capped mountains from a pleasant distance. The high summer months of July and August are when the city is at its hottest, but also when prices are at their highest. For cheap flights to Bilbao, it’s best to book from autumn to spring.
Spain is one of the most popular destinations with British tourists and there are a range of options for getting to northern Spain’s busiest airport from the UK. Most of London’s main international airports operate return flights to Bilbao. Both British Airways and Iberia have services from Heathrow, while Vueling flies daily from Gatwick and low-cost carrier EasyJet offers cheap tickets to Bilbao from Stansted, Bristol and Manchester. There are also regular one-stop flights from other regions in the UK, with Lufthansa connecting the city with Edinburgh and British Airways providing a service from Belfast.
Bilbao Airport not only serves the city of Bilbao, but is also the most important transport hub in the Basque Country and in northern Spain, with over four million passengers a year. It’s just five miles north of the city and offers a couple of public transport options for getting into town. The airport bus operated by Termibus, which departs the airport every 30 minutes, is your cheapest option. The journey to Plaza Moyúa in the city centre takes 15 minutes and will only cost you around €1.20. There are no rail connections to central Bilbao, but the airport is served by a constant flow of taxis and the trip to town will set you back around €20.
Although perhaps not as delicately pretty as its northern neighbour San Sebastián, visitors to Bilbao will be wowed by the authentic down-to-earth soul of this industrious city. The addition of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to the city’s skyline in 1996 provided the stimulus for a resurgence in investment and interest in Bilbao’s cultural scene. The Guggenheim is one of Spain’s largest museums, and its distinctive titanium structure represents the rebirth of artistic endeavour in the city. Fans of modern art can easily spend an entire day admiring its exhibitions, and a trip to the old quarter to sample some of the Basque Country’s best tapas rounds off the day perfectly.
