Bucharest embraces the long and varied history of central Europe, from its delightful old churches and museums to its pompous communist-era architecture. Gaze in wonder at the arrogance and harsh, communist angles of the massive Palatul Parlamentului (the second-largest administrative building in the world), explore Romanian and classical European culture at the impressive National Art Museum, or soak up vibrant, modern-day design at the National Museum of Contemporary Art. Books your flights to Bucharest and experience the wonderful cultural fusion that this city has to offer the moment your plane touches down at Henri Coandă International Airport.
Bucharest is a city for all seasons. At the same time, there are a number of factors you should think about before you make your trip. The city’s many parks spring into colourful life in April and May, while early autumn is still warm enough to enjoy a stroll around the laidback boulevards or to have a coffee in one of the city’s many outdoor cafés. July and August, on the other hand, can be very humid and hot, and are also the most expensive months to fly here. Cheap tickets to Bucharest can be found from January to March, a good time to wrap up and enjoy the culture and history of this fascinating city.
Bucharest is only around three to four hours from the UK by plane, and there is a wide range of direct flights available from airports all over the country. If you’re booking flights from London to Bucharest, British Airways flies from Heathrow to Henri Coandă International. Budget airlines Ryanair, Wizz and Blue Air also offer cheap flights to Bucharest from Stansted, Gatwick and Luton respectively. You’ll find a number of other routes available from other UK cities such as Glasgow, Liverpool, Birmingham and Bristol.
Bucharest’s main airport is located just over 10 miles north of central Bucharest. It operates a touch-screen taxi-ordering service, which allows you to avoid unreliable black-market taxis, however they can be expensive – around 95 Romanian lei during the day and 140 lei at night. There’s also a nearby railway station that offers services into the main terminal Gara de Nord for around 8 lei one way. The bus is the cheapest way to travel, with the 783 service to the heart of the city running every 15-30 minutes during the day and every 40 minutes at night. This costs 9 lei return and the journey takes 40 minutes when it’s quiet, rising to 60-90 minutes at rush hour.
Savour traditional Romanian cuisine in one of the many fantastic restaurants dotted around the Old Town, or rub shoulders with the locals in one of its charming old-world bars. To experience the more cosmopolitan side of Bucharest, check out the modern SkyBar on Dorobanti Street and enjoy a cocktail as you sit back and take in the breathtaking views of the city below.
