Perched high on a hill above its modern ville baisse (lower town), Carcassonne’s medieval fairy-tale castle is one of France’s most popular tourist attractions. Among the atmospheric drawbridges and turrets of the walled town of the Cité de Carcassonne,, you can wander through labyrinthine, cobbled alleyways, see houses from the Middle Ages, take a guided tour of the castle and visit the Basilica of St. Nazaire. There’s even a Museum of Torture, which displays the instruments of torture that were used to during the Inquisition, but be warned–it’s not for the faint-hearted! All direct flights to Carcassonne from the UK land at Carcassonne Airport, just a short distance from the city.
Carcassonne is a city that enjoys warm summers and mild winters so it’s worth a visit at any time of year. Temperatures often reach 30°C in July and August and this is also when hordes of visitors flock to admire the Cité. During peak season, the best time to visit the walled city is early morning or late afternoon when crowds are thin and temperatures pleasant. July is one of the liveliest months for events with stage performances and medieval re-enactments taking place during the Festival de Carcassonne. It’s also a memorable location to watch the Bastille Day fireworks on the 14th of July. Booking in advance is the best way to find cheap tickets to Carcassonne during the popular summer season.
The only airline that operates direct flights to Carcassonne from the UK is low-cost carrier Ryanair. You can fly from London Stansted all year round with daily flights during the high season between April and October and a less frequent schedule during the remaining months of the year. Ryanair also offers year-round flights to Carcassonne from Manchester, while from the end of March to the end of October you’ll find direct flights from the East Midlands and Glasgow also. It couldn’t be easier to get to this lovely Languedoc city– you’ll arrive in just under 2 hours from London.
Making the 4-mile journey east from Carcassonne airport to the city centre is a breeze. A taxi will whisk you to the city centre in 10 minutes for around €10, while the journey to the Cité takes a little longer and costs about €15. Shuttle buses depart from the airport around 30 minutes after ever scheduled flight arrival and a one-way ticket costs €5. If you don’t mind driving on the right-hand side of the road, there are plenty of rental car options available at the airport.
Lac de la Cavayere, also known as Carcassonne Beach, is an artificial lake located just a short distance outside the city of Carcassonne. Outdoor enthusiasts can discover the local flora and fauna on a 3-mile hike around the lake, while in summer visitors can enjoy the range of water activities on offer including swimming, windsurfing, kayaking and pedal boating.
