The city of Dortmund is probably most famous for football – Borussia Dortmund fans are renowned as being some of Germany’s most devoted, with tens of thousands regularly flocking to Signal Iduna Park stadium to cheer on the home team. But a passion for football is only the start of what this city has to offer. Here, you can discover a wealth of cultural attractions, including fascinating museums, historic landmarks and one of the best nightlife scenes in Germany. Flights to Dortmund Airport from Britain are provided by a number of low-cost carriers, which means prices are generally low – making it the perfect getaway for those looking for a dynamic, affordable city break.
This is a city where there is plenty to see and do all year round, but your best chance to snap up cheap tickets to Dortmund is in February or March. If you’re a music fan, fly in time for the MAYDAY Dortmund techno festival, which takes place around the end of April each year, or the Micro!Festival in August, an open-air street fair celebrating music and dance from around the world. During the months of November and December, Dortmund’s Hansaplatz gets into the festive spirit and is transformed into one of Germany’s largest Christmas markets with over 300 stalls and one of the biggest twinkling Christmas trees in the world.
Two budget airlines offer direct flights to Dortmund from the UK and both depart from London. Ryanair flights take off from Stansted six times a week to make the 80-minute journey to the city, while easyJet operates daily flights to Dortmund from Luton. From other British cities, your best bet is to make your way to London and grab a flight there; another option worth considering is flying to nearby Dusseldorf. A plethora of airlines offer direct flights from most major UK airports to the much larger Dusseldorf Airport, which is situated approximately 40 miles away from Dortmund.
Making the short eight-mile journey from Dortmund Airport to the city centre couldn’t be easier. You can hop on the AirportExpress bus, pay €9 for a one-way ticket and arrive at Dortmund Central Station in around 25 minutes. If you take a taxi to the centre, you can expect to pay around €30. From Dusseldorf airport, the quickest and most convenient transfer to Dortmund city centre is by train, and the transit time to Dortmund Central Station is generally less than one hour.
For panoramic views of the city, make sure to take the lift up to the observation platform on the top of Dortmund’s 680-foot TV-Tower, affectionately known as Florian, in Westfalenpark. When your feet are back on solid ground, make your way to a city-centre pub; Dortmund, after all, was once the beer-brewing capital of Europe, and sampling a local draught – accompanied by a Salzkuchen mit Mett, a meat-filled bread roll – is an absolute must.
