Jetting off with flights to Helsinki

Helsinki is the perfect spot for a Scandinavian getaway. When you book flights to Helsinki Airport, you will be rewarded with an insight into a city which has many faces, changing from seemingly never-ending sunshine in the summer to the darkness of midwinter. Gasp at the gigantic Suomenlinna sea fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is one of the biggest fortifications of its type in the world. Watch the sunshine sparkle on the Baltic Sea as you stroll along the harbour, or wow at the exhilarating design workshops and boutiques on display in the city’s hip Design District.

When to travel to Helsinki

If it’s nightlife you’re after, then summer is the perfect time to visit the Land of the Midnight Sun’s capital, when nights blend seamlessly into mornings and visitors can soak up the city’s world-famous heavy metal scene. If you have something more relaxing in mind, savour a coffee on a terrace and absorb the slow-burning fade of the evening light. Or take a trip at the end of the year when December’s Christmas markets and many ice rinks are sure to delight. Unfortunately, this is also the most expensive time of year to travel, along with July and August, but you can bag cheap tickets to Helsinki if you book outside of these periods.

How can I fly to Helsinki?

Helsinki is only a three-hour flight from the UK, and given its status as a European capital city, there are a range of providers to choose from. National carrier Finnair flies directly from Heathrow to Helsinki Airport, as does British Airways, while Norwegian Air Shuttle flies from Gatwick. KLM and Air Baltic offer alternative services, with stopovers in Amsterdam and Riga respectively. Other options for comparing cheap flights to Helsinki include Finnair’s and British Airways’ direct services from Manchester, while KLM also travels from Manchester via Amsterdam.

Getting from Helsinki airport to the city centre

Transport options from Helsinki airport are plentiful. HSL buses 615 and 620 run every 30 minutes from the airport to the central railway station, taking around 35-45 minutes and costing just €5. Your ticket will also cover transfers on to other HSL buses, trams or metros for 80 minutes. Finnair city bus is a bit faster – 30 minutes – and slightly more expensive – around €6 – and leaves the airport every 20 minutes. The quickest option is a taxi, but they’re generally not cheap, coming in at around €35-40, although cheaper fixed-rate taxis such as Airport Taxi are available from €20 if you can get one.

Sweat it out in a traditional Finnish sauna

Saunas are an important part of Finnish culture, with over three million of them spread out all over the country. Helsinki is no exception and offers a plethora of indulgent options to choose from. Check out the impressive Loyly complex, where you can pamper yourself with a luxurious sauna experience, and top it all off with a delicious meal on the terrace as you soak up the fabulous sea views.
