Jersey offers British holidaymakers a staycation with a twist; this tiny island in the English Channel manages to blend old English charm with a unique European influence found nowhere else in the UK. As flights to Jersey come in to land at Jersey Airport, visitors will get a head-turning panorama of its picturesque shoreline, old stone castles and emerald-green pastures. Don’t be fooled by this serene view, however; there’s also plenty of adventure to be had on the island. Nature lovers will delight in Jersey’s cliff walks and scenic coastal drives, while history buffs can visit storied sights like The Jersey War Tunnels complex and Elizabeth Castle.
The weather in Jersey stays temperate all year round, with warm summers, cool winters and the occasional unpredictable bout of wind, rain or sun. During the cooler months of November and March, the countryside is at its most rugged, and this is the perfect time to check out the island’s cosy pubs. For beach weather and outdoor pursuits, the best time to book is spring or summer – the landscape is a riot of colour, days are balmier and the sea begins to warm up around May. Flight prices tend to be pretty consistent all year round, and with the range of routes and carriers on offer, cheap tickets to Jersey can usually be found as long as you book in advance.
Cheap flights to Jersey set off from a host of cities on the British mainland all year round. Departure airports on offer include London Gatwick, London City, Southampton, Cardiff, Nottingham, Bristol and Manchester. The most frequent carrier to serve the island is flybe, while easyJet and British Airways also operate flights to the island from the long list of departure spots. Expect flight times lasting between 50 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the airport that you’re flying from.
As Jersey is just five miles long and nine miles wide, it doesn’t take long to get from one end to the other. The public-bus system has a regular connection – no. 15 – from the airport to St Helier, the capital. This leaves every 15 minutes from the arrivals terminal on weekdays, takes around 30 minutes and costs £2 for an adult. Car rental is available from the airport if you’d like to take a freer approach to seeing the sights, and a taxi can also whisk you to your final destination if you’d rather not navigate the roads.
Jersey’s local cuisine is a wonderful example of where its southern English and northern French influences collide. The island is known for its stalwart diet staples, which include seafood, delicious dairy products from its native breed of cows and its waxy-skinned ‘royal’ potatoes. Be sure to sample ‘Jersey wonders’, or mèrvelles, tasty bite-sized fried pastries that are usually served up in a basket, and don’t forget to try the local wine during your trip.
