Although best known for beach breaks and party hot spots, Mallorca has much more to offer its many tourists. The airport in Palma, the cosmopolitan Balearic capital, is the third-largest in the country, and welcomes flights to Mallorca full of travellers keen to soak up everything this sparkling Spanish isle has in store. With idyllic beaches, awe-inspiring history, eclectic nightlife and shopping to satisfy every taste and budget, this is an island that has it all – and its diversity means you can do as much or as little as you like on your getaway.
With its long sun-soaked summers and mild balmy winters, Mallorca makes for an enticing escape at any time. Best of all, given the large number of scheduled flights from the UK, you should be able to find cheap tickets to Mallorca all year round if your dates are somewhat flexible. Naturally, fares tend to be a little more expensive in the warmer months, but booking return flights to Mallorca in advance of the peak summer season will ensure you have more than enough money to spend when you get there.
You’ll find a dizzying array of direct flights to Mallorca from a multitude of UK airports. The main contenders are the low-cost carriers, with Ryanair flying out from Bournemouth, Leeds, Bristol, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham and London Stansted. EasyJet takes off from Glasgow, Bristol, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Manchester, Belfast, Newcastle, London Stansted, Gatwick and Luton, and Jet2 also operates a host of routes from multiple British cities. Those living in the South West can fly from Southampton and Exeter with Flybe, and if you’re shopping around for deals it might also be worth checking out Monarch Airlines and British Airways.
Making the short five-mile journey from Palma airport to the city centre is a cinch. The most convenient option is to book a door-to-door shuttle service in advance or simply jump in a taxi on arrival. The drive to the city centre takes around 15 minutes and shouldn’t cost more than €20. For a cheaper journey, hop on the Line 1 bus that runs 4 times per hour and admire the views on the short trip to the centre. A one-way bus ticket will set you back €2.
The city of Palma is the perfect base for a classic Balearic holiday. Mallorca’s capital is full of contrasts – from its big-city atmosphere to its quaint old-town quarter, where you can lose yourself in a winding maze of alleyways and secret squares. You’ll stumble upon countless gems like chic boutiques, authentic tapas bars and funky nightspots, all set against the striking backdrop of the gothic cathedral. If you get peckish, don’t miss out on Mallorca’s signature dish fideua - the local version of paella made with noodles instead of rice. And your taste buds will also thank you for trying the delicious local olives and almonds.
