The balmy Balearics have been serving up fish’n’chips and pints of bitter to British holidaymakers for generations. But these friendly little islands in the Med have a lot more to offer today’s savvy traveller than sun, sea and sangria – nice as they are! Menorca is smaller than Mallorca and quieter than Ibiza, a peaceful escape from the daily grind with a cosy familiarity that puts you at ease the minute you land at Menorca Airport. Flights to Menorca can turn your grey skies blue in under 3 hours.
High summer, especially during the school holidays, is the most popular time for sun-starved Brits looking for a family-friendly getaway, so avoid the peak season if your plans allow. Early May and late September are warm enough to enjoy the beach without the crowds. The mild winters lend themselves to al fresco dining and long walks, while Menorca’s sheltered coves, or calas, are naturally designed for a bracing dip. Thanks to the island’s enduring popularity, cheap tickets to Menorca are easily sourced all year round, but you’ll save even more by booking well ahead.
Direct flights to Menorca depart from many UK regional airports, courtesy of scheduled carriers as well as tour operators selling flight-only capacity on charters. Monarch Airlines flies from Birmingham and Manchester, and Thomas Cook Airlines offers departures from Bristol. Scheduled flights departing from London airports include EasyJet from Gatwick and Luton and British Airways from Heathrow. EasyJet also serves Liverpool, Bristol and Southend – a convenient option for travellers from London and the south-east.
At the end of your flight to Menorca you’ll need to find the best way to reach your final destination. The airport lies just outside the island’s capital, Mahon, so if you’re staying in Mahon itself it’s a quick hop by bus – there’s a direct link to the main bus station departing hourly during the winter months and more frequently in summer. Alternatively, a taxi to the city centre will cost around €10. The former capital of Ciutadella is 30 miles away at the opposite end of the island, so if you don’t fancy a bus journey of nearly 2 hours you’re well advised to grab a cab. If you’re staying in a resort hotel, check to see if they offer free airport transfers for guests.
Menorca’s natural beauty is one of its chief attractions, with plenty of unspoilt beaches fringed by banks of foliage and protected by craggy rocks. The freshwater lagoon of S’Albufera welcomes many species of wetland birds, while the sparsely populated interior is a walker’s paradise. Watch the Moorish turrets of Ciutadella’s old town turn to gold in the evening sunlight and snack on fresh sardines grilling by the roadside, head into stylish Mahon to browse for handmade leatherware and pottery, or sample spicy paella in a cosy harbourside restaurant. All it takes is a little blue-sky thinking.
