It’s not often that you get to experience both a sense of tranquillity and exuberance in the same place – Sicily’s capital Palermo offers the perfect mix of calm and energy, whatever your mood. From the loud honk of traffic on its busy streets to the welcome peace inside its beautiful old churches, this bustling Italian city is a feast for the senses. Flights to Palermo touch down in the nearby Falcone–Borsellino Airport, so you’ll have a few moments to cast your eye over clear blue water, red roofs and impressive domes, while rocky green hills firmly stand their ground around the edge of town. Climb to the top of the Cattedrale di Palermo for a bird’s-eye view of the action, and grab a beer in the Mercato di Ballarò and bask in the colourful chaos that defines this historic metropolis.
Palermo has its down time during Mediterranean winter months, so snatching up cheap flights to Palermo is best done between October and March when the weather is still mild and pleasant, with temperatures hovering around the 17°C mark. Things starts to heat up in April, when locals and tourists alike begin to flock to the shores of this north-west coastal city. You can still pick up good deals on flights between May and September, especially if you’re willing to travel mid-week and book in advance. If you’re visiting in July, be sure to catch the Festa di St. Rosalia, an annual festival boasting colourful fireworks and traditional Sicilian street food.
Cheap tickets to Palermo are available all year from a small handful of carriers, namely Ryanair, British Airways and easyJet. Direct flights tend to be a standard three hours each way, but be sure to take into account the one-hour time difference. With London acting as the UK’s central gateway, Ryanair jets off from Stansted Airport, easyJet flies from its hub in London Gatwick, and British Airways departs from Heathrow.
For those wishing to navigate the city’s fast streets, renting a car will zip you into the centre in about half an hour. Car hire is available at the airport from Hertz, Europar, Avis and Autoeuropa. Bearing in mind that parking can be a challenge on such narrow streets, public transport options are a convenient alternative, with the Prestia e Comande bus taking just 55 minutes to the central station and costing about €5 one way. A taxi from arrivals is likely the most comfortable option, though it comes in at about €35 euro, and some negotiation on price may be necessary in advance.
You can’t fully experience Palermo without sampling its world-famous local delicacies. Hunt down one of the city’s many eateries that serves arancini – crispy fried rice balls with tomato sauce filling – and wash it down with a crisp Sicilian wine. Then, wander the vibrant streets and pick up as many sweet, ricotta-filled cannoli for dessert as you can muster.
