With its reputation as a paradise for rock climbers, many visitors can claim to have seen Reus from above, but there’s no substitute for the full panorama as you come in to land at Reus Airport. The birthplace of Antoni Gaudí is known for its wealth of fabulous buildings in the iconic Catalan Modernist style, although it was in nearby Barcelona that the celebrated architect was to leave his lasting legacy. Flights to Reus offer travellers direct access to one of Catalonia’s best-kept secrets – a city surrounded by mountains and yet just a few miles from some of the best beaches of the Costa Dorada.
The Costa Dorada’s reliable climate and long-established tourism industry make it a fabulous year-round destination, although the traditional peak months of July and August are particularly popular with sun-starved Brits. Reus is famous for its fiestas, when the city’s squares are filled with lively parades and the bars and cafés are packed with revellers. The most important festivals are Sant Pere on 29 June and Mare de Déu de la Misericòrdia on 25 September, meaning flights around these dates are liable to be especially busy. The best way to find cheap tickets to Reus is to shop around and keep your dates flexible – buying your flights as early as possible also gives you the chance to get discounts when booking.
Popular low-cost airline Ryanair has helped to put this city on the map, with year-round return flights to Reus from London Stansted as well as seasonal departures from UK regional airports including Bristol, Liverpool and Glasgow Prestwick. Fellow budget carrier Jet2 operates direct routes from Leeds, East Midlands and Manchester, all with a flight time of just over 2 hours.
Reus Airport is served by Intercity bus line 50, which stops in the city centre (Plaza de la Llibertat) as well as the main train and bus stations. From there, you can link into the local public-transport network. A one-way ticket costs €3 and the journey takes around 35 minutes, depending on traffic. There are also direct bus services to the nearby resorts of the Costa Dorada. For door-to-door convenience, a taxi rank is right outside the terminal, with an information office in the arrivals hall; expect to pay around €25 for destinations in the city centre.
Reus’s most famous son is commemorated in the Gaudí Centre, a striking building on the Plaza del Mercadal opened in 2007. Here you can learn more about the life and work of the architect who defined Catalan Modernism. You can also follow the Modernist trail around the city centre to see all the finest examples of this highly decorative style by Gaudí’s contemporaries. Casa Navàs is one of the landmark buildings of Lluis Domenech i Montaner, one of the founding fathers of Modernism, with original features that remain unchanged both inside and out.
