Iceland is the land of midnight sun and shimmering winter skies, of volcano-filled moonscapes and wild coastline. The gateway to this magically remote North Atlantic jewel is the country’s small but vibrant capital, Reykjavik. Many of the nation’s historical and cultural highlights are here, including the National and Saga museums, where you can discover the country’s fascinating Viking past. This hidden northern gem has never been more accessible with flights to Reykjavik available from all over the UK.
The world’s most northerly capital may be a relatively compact city, but Reykjavik has a huge variety of awe-inspiring attractions no matter what time of year you visit. The summer months bring with them incredibly long hours of daylight and this is the most popular time to visit, with plenty of hip music festivals drawing crowds from across Europe. Things are a little quieter come autumn and early winter and this is the best time to find cheap tickets to Reykjavik. The traditional rounding up of the island’s sheep takes place in autumn, and the long winter nights are prime time to catch a glimpse of the spellbinding Northern Lights.
Iceland’s rugged northern beauty and smouldering volcanos are attracting more and more tourists every year. In previous years the only UK airline services were from London, but today you can book return flights to Reykjavik from a variety of cities. Budget carrier EasyJet has regular flights to Keflavík Airport from Belfast, Luton and Manchester. Wow Air flies from Bristol and Gatwick, while British Airways and Icelandair offer daily connections from London Heathrow.
Keflavík International Airport is Reykjavik and Iceland’s main hub for international transport and is located 30 miles outside the city centre. The cheapest transport option is to take the local bus – route no. 55 – but there are also private companies offering direct connections to the BSI bus terminal in central Reykjavik. The Airport Express and Flybus services both cost roughly the same and their bus schedules coincide with incoming and outbound flights. It’s about a 50-minute journey to the city centre, and if you want private transport, you can also opt for one of the many taxi companies that serve the airport.
Reykjavik is the perfect base from which to explore the many diverse sides of Iceland. Experience Iceland’s volcanic landscape with a trip to the Blue Lagoon. Visit the city’s rotating Perlan glass dome or the impressive concrete Hallgrimskirkja church for sweeping panoramic vistas of the surrounding hills and sea. The popular Golden Circle is a tourist trail that gives a great taste of the country’s amazing natural environment. This 186-mile route loops from Reykjavik to central Iceland and takes in the thundering Gullfoss waterfall and the perpetually active Strokkur geyser. A variety of airlines offer cheap flights to Reykjavik from all across the UK – make sure you check out the best deals for airports near you.
