It's always been popular with Brits, thanks to its holy tourist trinity of sun, sea, and sand. But you'll find Tenerife is an island of two halves these days. You could slot into place on the busy resort beaches of the south, where the sunshine is as guaranteed as the rosy-pink hues of those “topping up the tan”. That's where many flying into Tenerife South airport are heading. Or you can turn your back on the crowds, and head north. Here you'll be wowed by mind-blowing scenery, enjoy fabulous cuisine or gasp in the thin air of Teide's 3,700-metre summit (cable car options are available).
Whichever side of the island you choose to tread, you'll be lapping up glorious weather most of the year. Tenerife is famed for its mild climate. In the south it's warm and dry from March to December almost without fail. The north is almost as warm in the summer, with a tad more cloud and with cooler rainy spells in winter. Flights are cheapest in November and December, but can get steep in February around carnival time. You should aim to book flights to Tenerife around three months before travel, for the best deals.
With great popularity comes a great number of airline connections. So you're pretty much spoiled for choice, here. Tenerife South airport is one of the busiest for incoming Brits – you'll be able to fly here from airports all over the UK. Scots can choose from EasyJet or RyanAir at Edinburgh, and from British Airways, Iberia or Aer Lingus at Glasgow airport. All the London airports have multiple airlines on the roster, as do Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester. Expect a 4- to 5-hour flight. If you're heading for the north side, you might want to take a connecting flight via Madrid to Tenerife North.
Tenerife South is well connected by buses to the big resorts like Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos. Expect to have change from a €5 note for a single fare to these. The shuttle bus service between Tenerife South and Tenerife North is frequent and connects you to less touristy towns along the way. But this isn't a small island, and is pretty mountainous in places. So if you're planning to turn your Tenerife stay into a voyage of discovery, a hire car would make a lot of sense.
No longer such a tourist trap, Tenerife has become a destination for the discerning of late. Away from the beach resorts, you'll find an extravaganza for the senses. In the north, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a bustling city of Canarian culture that boasts museums, galleries, theatres and restaurants. Puerto de la Cruz is a sophisticated resort with plenty of fishing village charm. The coast around Los Gigantes is breathtaking, with its plunging cliffs and hide-away beaches. And towering over all is the majesty of Mount Teide, always seen, often snow-capped and rarely climbed. Unless you take the cable car.
