Zagreb was once off the radar, but now that the bargain-hunters have sniffed it out, you need to be smart to find cheap tickets to Zagreb. Start with the seasons. There are peaks to avoid: Easter is crowded and summer is too hot, so why not plan for a cool winter break in February? Or for some warm autumn sunshine, aim to be sipping a beer in Zagreb's central square in September. There's less rain in these months, too. If you make your booking around 50 days before your departure date (preferably on a Tuesday), cheap flights to Zagreb are a virtual guarantee.
Zagreb is so cool it's becoming a hotspot for airlines from the UK. You'll find that airports across the country fly here now, at reasonable rates too. Not too many fly directly though, except Croatian Airways and British Airways from Heathrow. The cheapest airline from London is easyJet, but Lufthansa isn't too far behind. For cheap flights to Zagreb from Edinburgh try Eurowings, Turkish Airlines or Norwegian. It doesn't take long to reach the Croatian capital, either. You can land at Zagreb International Airport (aka Pleso Airport) just two hours after takeoff on a direct flight from the UK.
Zagreb International Airport (ZAG) is in Pleso, around 15 miles south-east of the city centre. A taxi shuttle is laid on to central Zagreb, which costs around HRK 70 to HRK 120. To save a few kuna, you can always catch the airport bus. A single ticket costs less than HRK 40, and will drop you off at the capital's main bus station. From there, the simplest way to your hotel might be a taxi, but Zagreb's tram system is as comprehensive as it is fun.
The vibe in Zagreb is rarely less than wonderful, and its streets are alive with café culture. You might come here to sight-see but end up chatting with the friendly locals. There's plenty to admire here, though. Centuries as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire have left Zagreb's streets packed with eye-catching buildings. Then there are museums you won't find anywhere else (the Museum of Broken Relationships, anyone?), art that's only a little less funky than the building housing it (Museum of Contemporary Art), or a cemetery that feels like a country palace (Mirogoj Cemetery). Only in Zagreb.
