The concierge was a waist of space. Asked, "Where can we get a great deep dish pizza". Answer, "Get a map at the reception"

Amazing location, tired hotel & dodgy staff

Amazing location off Michigan Avenue a short walk to the Chicago (red line) CTA stop. Rooms were very clean and large - beds very comfortable and plenty of seating. Bathroom was fine if a bit dated and the rain shower temperature control was a bit fiddly. Three things let the hotel down: the lobby, the staff and the breakfast. The lobby and hallways are very tired - in major need of a facelift with stained carpets, poor lighting and chipped paint. The vibe in the lobby is much better at night when the dark obscures some of these deficiencies and the martini bar comes alive with a piano. The staff were all friendly but very informal (almost to the point of being disrespectful/aggressive) and very hungry for tips, especially at the restaurant and - oddly - at the front desk. The breakfast was just a bit odd - a menu of some very strange creations indeed, including chicken and waffles with both gravy and jam. And an orange slice on every plate. The 'breakfast included' room we booked actually had a breakfast allowance of $16.50 a day - even though everything was more than this by the time tax and tip were added. Should either include breakfast in the rate or tell people it is all a la carte - this approach was just clumsy and not guest friendly. The staff couldn't even confirm what the allowance was per person per day. Definitely not 4-star quality hotel facilities, food or service but I would consider staying again for the clean room, amazing location and decent weekend rates.

Excellent location

Good location just off Magnificent Mile for shopping, with Macy's and Bloomingdales a short walk away. Only criticism for me and what I would ask to see is for wifi to be included in rooms and not restricted to the lobby.

Shopping in Chicago!

This was my first visit to Chicago - I loved it! The hotel was perfectly located right at the start of the magnificent mile. The beds were soo comfy. You get complimentary tea & coffee. The only thing was that this was laid out for 2 when there were 4 of us sharing a 4 occupancy room. The room was very spacious. The view out the window wasn't great but that wasn't a problem as we didn't stay in the room during the day. Chicagoans take pride in their city - it's clean and tidy. They are also lovely people. In the main there is respect and order between cars and pedestrians and although this is a major city, there is a calm on the streets unlike the hustle and bustle of city's like London or New York. There are plenty of places to eat as well as shop - as my mum said - I shopped until the rest of my family dropped! It was my birthday whilst there and we celebrated at the Cheesecake Factory - cheesecake as not experienced before - s'mores or peanut butter to just name 2 - oh decisions decisions!!! The city is lovely enhanced by the architecture. The river tours are definitely a must and well recommended to get a great view and understanding of the history from knowledgable guides. The view from John Hancock building was absolutely fabulous. The Chicago skyline is beautiful and the lake - Amazing - like looking out to sea. There are beggars on the streets but you find them anywhere in any country. If you go to water tower place there are sales assistants on stalls pushing mostly hand products - just be careful and don't make the mistake that I did - if you're not prepared to engage with them and seriously consider purchasing their products - don't accept the free offer of a sample! I had the feeling of absolute safety. In the evenings police officers are out and around on the streets. For travelling around, the alternative to walking is also to use the transport system which includes the bus and the El (elevated train). For $33 I got a travel card which also doubles as a MasterCard debit card (US use only) and unlimited 1 weeks use - and for those of you who are "while you were sleeping" fans there is the joy of visiting warbash street and Randolph/warbash el station to reenact all those scenes! I would love to go back again. Chicago is definitely a must City to add to your list of places to go.

Great location

Great hotel, in a great location for all downtown and all sightseeing. Friendly staff and a nice room, although we did book a superior king so I have no idea what a regular king would be like - probably small. The hotel is currently having a small facelift so the beautiful facade is covered which was a shame but will be unveiled soon I believe.

Good Value Hotel - Shame about the scaffolding !

We booked the hotel for 6 nights as part of a package through Virgin It was a good hotel in what for us was a very good location (Just off of the North end of the ''Magnificent Mile'' so close to shops / restaurants etc . Around the corner from the John Hancock building -- and a short walk to Oak Street Beach.#. We arrived to find the front of the hotel covered in scaffolding #which we weren't made aware of - and would have appreciated knowing as it impacted directly on the window of our room.# Our room #304# was at the front of the hotel and was clean, comfortable and quiet. We did have a couple of issues with housekeeping #Toiletries not replenished #until we asked !# Coffee making items not replaced on one day and a dirty duster left in the room#. However, these were minor issues and did not impact on our stay. The staff were all very personable and helpful and the bar was good although often very busy and - for us - spoiled by the fact that there are bar stools along the whole length of the bar so when they were occupied #most nights# it was very difficult to get to the bar. We liked the free internet in the hotel business centre and had a very nice breakfast in the restaurant on our last day #and received excellent service there as well#. Overall we would recommend the hotel for value, comfort and location.

Weekend Break

Stayed at the Knickerbocker Hotel, which in the heart of Chicago, near all the shops, restaurants and attractions, can't fault the hotel room catered to my every need. The only down side was having to pay a refundable charge of $225 for if you use the mini bar in your room. Got to mention David best cocktails, had a pear martini, would recommend that you pay David a visit if you are ever in this hotel.

Nice but not worth the money

The room was as I expected from reading previous reviews; small but nicely appointed. Huge and comfortable bed but it took up most of the room space so even though there was a comfy chair, there was no way to re-position it. The lack of wifi access in the rooms at the premium price you pay is utterly ridiculous. I'd stayed in a Red Roof Inn and another private hotel on this trip which were, although not anywhere near as fancy, far more comfortable and much better value. While in Chicago, someone recommended the Lincoln Hotel which I may try next time if I return.
