For an old building the place was beautifully kept and the new annex building was also clean and stunning

An Olde world experience

Pros: Good car park . Warm an freindly. All staff very pleasant and helpfull.
Cons: On booking breakfast included.. At booking in, it was stated that in was not. The breakfast steward said it was. On booking out was asked to pay,
We only stayed for one night to enable us to attended an early morning funeral.

Good base

Pros: Ideal location for us
Cons: Customer service and staff levels
Location: Not a pretty location but a pretty hotel
Overall our stay was good and served its purpose as we were using it as a base for a night out. The hotel was busy due to a big party and the staff were stretched. The phone did not work in the room and when we were trying to get room service by using our own phone, the answer phone kept kicking in. When we did get an answer we were transferred to the kitchen who promptly cut us off. The receptionist should have taken our order. When we mentionened the fact that the phone was not working in our room we were told that most people do not use them these days. .. As two women staying at the hotel, the extra comfort of knowing you have means of contacting reception is important. The room was also very very warm and we were unable to set the temperate. Our room service trays with food still on them were on the floor still when we checked out from our meal the night before. Despite telling the recptionist at 7.45pm. Overall it was an ok stay not terrible but it’s a shame that the customer service wasn’t great. Great as a base for a night out but not sure I would stay for any other reason.

The F&B team were a member of staff down and receptionist was helping out, but I can only apologise about not getting an answer on the telephone - this is not our usual standard. Good hotel for short stay in Colchester.

Pros: See the above comments ! (Excellent shower in the bathroom !)
Cons: Like many hotels, the lighting in the bedroom could be better; difficult to read while sitting on the bed,
Location: Fairly central, pleasant park and river nearby.
I now always stay in the Rose & Crown during my visits to Colchester for croquet tournaments. Lovely old building, good bedrooms, efficient staff, easy parking.
