Having stayed at Pollock Halls several times during the Fringe Festival, I knew what to expect. It's student accommodation. The room was simple, basic and clean but there are shared bathrooms, which strangely always seem to be vacant . There were two just outside my room. Breakfast is included and there is a vast buffet area with a great choice of food. There is a cash machine and a shop which stays open until midnight. Frequent buses to the city centre stop a couple of minutes' walk away at the Commonwealth Pool. There's also a a bar and restaurant on site . The real plus is that it is far cheaper than any of the other hotels during August.

The team on reception were very helpful upon arrival. The breakfast buffet was very good. Our room was not cleaned one day, and despite following instructions for clean towels, we didn’t receive these until the last day. We arrived back late both days we realised these things, so felt too tired and exhausted to complain at reception. The beds were probably the most uncomfortable beds we had ever slept in with each morning waking to either a numb hip or a painful back. The toilet seat was broken. For the price, I would pay slightly more for a mediocre hotel. My expectations weren’t huge but was very disappointed with this stay. For a night, fine but four nights was a painful stretch. We won’t be revisiting.

Run of the mill student accommodation

Pros: Location
Cons: just about everything
Location: proximity to city centre is main attraction
Budget accommodation reasonably close to Edinburgh city centre. Shared bathrooms which were fine. Noise is an issue as doors are spring loaded and slam shut. If you need a really dark room to sleep bring eye shades. Canteen food is adequate.

Why I am back here ?

Pros: Many students, young energy!
Cons: Sings in the building. Can't find my way out...
Location: Holyrood Palace ( be careful, not very easy to find your way back!
Breakfast keeps guests coming back, I guess. I like the gardens too!
