An overview of cheap flights to Algeria

Algeria, Africa’s largest country, offers travellers an enticing combination of rugged Mediterranean coastline and lively port cities, while in the massive Saharan region, oasis towns and the Hoggar Mountains await intrepid explorers. If you’re looking to book direct, cheap flights to Algeria from the UK, aim to touch down in the country’s capital of Algiers on the northern coast. This beguiling city, with its mishmash of Ottoman, French colonial and Moorish architecture, will make an impression on any traveller – and can also serve as a first port of call if you’re looking to explore more of the country.

When should I visit Algeria?

The best time of year to visit Algeria really depends on your exact destination, not least because the size of the country makes for very diverse weather conditions. The northern coast is worth visiting all year round, with warm, dry summers and mild winters. If you’re planning to embark on a Saharan adventure, however, avoid the searing summer heat and plan your trip for winter – and make sure to pack plenty of warm clothes, as temperatures can drop dramatically at night. In general, you’ll find the best deals on cheap flights to Algeria from the UK in November and January, while prices tend to peak during the summer.

How do I get to Algeria?

Two airlines operate direct flights from Britain to Algeria. British Airways, the UK’s flag carrier, jets off from London Gatwick on a regular basis and lands just under three hours later in Algiers. Air Algerie also operates regular flights to Algiers from London Heathrow. For connecting flights, you can fly with Air France via Paris from Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh to both Algiers and Oran, Algeria’s second-largest city. Lufthansa, meanwhile, also operates one-stop flights to Algiers via Frankfurt from London, Manchester and Birmingham.

Getting from Algeria’s airports to your destination

A taxi to the centre from Algiers’ Houari Boumediene Airport can take up to 50 minutes depending on traffic, and shouldn’t cost more than 1,500 dinar. It’s a good idea to agree on a price with the driver first as most taxis don’t use meters. Otherwise, ETUSA is the public bus service linking the airport to the city, and connections leave regularly. Journey times vary, and can be anything up to one hour. Private shuttles are also available. If you’re arriving in Oran airport, a taxi is the best way of getting to the city centre, located eight miles away.

Rocking the Casbah in Algeria

Algeria’s capital is nicknamed ‘Algiers the White’ owing to its large number of white buildings, and no trip to the city would be complete without taking the time to discover some of the most famous of them all in the UNESCO-listed Casbah district. Best visited on a guided tour, this fascinating medina houses ancient palaces alongside newly restored buildings. The further you climb the steep maze of streets, the more you’ll be rewarded with a sensational view of the city and the Mediterranean below.
