A number of airports welcome millions of tourists to Mexico each year. Mexico City International Airport receives the largest number of visitors, and is located 12km east of the city centre. The next busiest airport is Cancún International Airport, in the east of Mexico, which sits 18km south of the centre of Cancún.
Mexico City is served by good transport links, so getting to and from the airport should be fairly simple. From Mexico City International, you can catch the Metrobus from Terminals 1 and 2 into downtown Mexico, which costs 30 pesos and takes about 20 minutes. Taxis are available from the airport, and it is recommended that you use airport-approved taxis. Fares depend on where you are going, and may involve some haggling. The journey time is approximately 20 minutes. From Cancún Airport, you can get airport taxi transfers into the city centre, which cost 40 pesos and take about 25 minutes. Rental cars are available from both airports.
The climate in Mexico is generally warm, with mild winters and fairly hot summers. The wet season reaches its peak in July, and the driest season is around February. Summer temperatures in Mexico City can reach 30˚C, and in winter can drop as low as -2˚C with some snow. In Cancún, the weather remains warm all year round. It becomes hot and humid between May and September owing to its proximity to the Caribbean, so a trip in winter is preferred by many visitors.
Mexico is a dazzling country with festivals happening all year round. You can take part in these at any time of the year, as there is at least one festival a month. Independence Day, celebrated in September, is an exciting time in Mexico City, and this is your chance to experience the colours and flavours of the capital. Cancún is home to Mayan historical sites, some of which are very close to the hotels, so don’t miss the opportunity to appreciate some of Mexico’s fascinating history.
