The Messe Frankfurt is one of the world's largest trade fairs and has its own convention centre. While there are numerous Frankfurt hotels offering conferencing facilities and with typical German efficiency, this is a conference centre at the airport itself, in the quaintly named The Squaire.
Famous for the sausage to which it borrows its name, Frankfurt has a much wider choice of food to offer. Niewo serves excellent French-oriental fusion; Vipho serves authentic Vietnamese food in a modern European restaurant; and the Im Herzen Afrikas (Heart of Africa) serves unusual and very tasty dishes.
You can buy everything you want in Frankfurt, with many shopping choices close to major Frankfurt hotels. For high street brands go to Zeil, the main shopping street. For something a little more bohemian, there is Leipziger Strasse, if you like up-and-coming designers and jewellery. For haute couture, try Goethestrasse for Versace or Gucci. And if independent or quirky is your thing, head to the Neue Krame shopping area.
Jokingly nicknamed Mainhattan, Frankfurt is a city of skyscrapers. You can admire them at their best from the old iron bridge Eiserner Steg. The bridge is just a minute's walk from Romerberg, the old centre of the city with its fourteen-century buildings. In 2015, Frankfurt will host the world's largest motor show.
The big three sports in Frankfurt are football, with the wonderfully named Eintracht, meaning concord or harmony, ice hockey, with the Frankfurt Lions, and basketball. And if you like water sports, join the locals and try rowing on the River Main.
