Good quality hotel in a great setting

Hotel is very clean and rooms are spacious and comfortable with high quality fittings. Staff overall were really friendly and efficient. We ate in the restaurant both nights and the food was nice - well cooked and presented. The hotel is in a lovely quiet location amongst beautifully conserved buildings and at the start of a lovely walk up the river Clyde where there are some fantastic waterfalls. Really enjoyed our break.

    Slipping Standards

Room and hotel generally too cold. Service in restaurant on second night was abysmal when we were ignored, without a menu or drinks request for almost 15 minutes. Swimming pool closed for guests on the Tuesday afternoon! Receptionist pointed to a notice on the counter but this information was not clearly communicated when I was booking? I could have almost have written my name in the dust on the circular table in our bedroom. Also, the towel rails in the bathroom never heated ( despite the printed warning) and the shower drain was incorrectly sited leaving too much of the floor dangerously wet and slippery following a shower. Finally, the breakfast porridge was made with water and not milk......in Scotland, the home of porridge: aagh, Come on! On the plus side, all the staff were generally very pleasant and seemed genuinely concerned when I complained. Also, the afternoon coffee and scones were good. We have stayed in this hotel four times now, including with six family members over Hogmany. Would now have to give serious consideration as to whether I would return. PS: Am not normally a complainer but it is a shame to see the standards slipping in what I had previously regarded as one of my favourite hotels! I understand that a new Manager has literally just been appointed. Perhaps he will rise to the challenge. Get the small things right and the big ones will look after themselves.
