A winter retreat by the straights
It may have been because it was January but the place was just a few degrees under the outstanding we expected (e.g. coffee and tea supplies in room not replenished), but still a very good place to stay. We were in the lodges, a modern edition with distinctly modern building standards - unlike the main building, where I doubt you can hear snoring through the walls from the room next door or have taps fitted so they work the wrong way round. The lodge is accessed off a separate driveway from the main hotel entrance, it's quite narrow and steep - not a problem for us but may put some off. We only had chance to eat breakfast at the hotel during our weekend, but our plates (and everyone else's that we saw) were mouthwatering. The main hotel itself is a treasure trove of interest, lovely views over the straights (as was the case from our bedroom) from various rooms and period furniture / features that are a delight. Found the staff to be very helpful and friendly, not just polite / professional but - for example - able to recall you from the day before and engage with you on that basis, despite there being a good number of guests staying.
