business and leisure trip

The hotel has a very special, nice feeling I could find very seldom. Everything was over the expectations. Only one thing deteriorated the overall perfectness: as our flight was due in the evening I asked 5 hours overstay in the room. It was granted but against of the 50 of the full day full price. I expected it to be granted free (as it frequently happened in other hotels) or max. 1/4 or 1/3 price.

Great family holiday

We stayed in this hotel for three nights within a three week tour of China and it was by far the best hotel we stayed in. The room was spacious and there was a separate bath and shower which was great for our 15 mth old as we had previously experienced shower only hotel rooms. The swimming pool, sauna, steam facilities were great - really clean and a great escape from the city with a baby in tow. My son was sick late one night and staff were quick to come and change the bed sheets. We had a meal in the French/Italian restaurant in the hotel and it was the first time in China we had been given baby bowl and forks. The restaurant was almoat empty and our son pushed his car up and down the floor and staff were friendly and let him play. Everywhere in China is really baby friendly, they seem to love babies and be a lot more tolerant then in western society. My son constantly had a entourage with his white skin and blonde hair - had his picture taken more than David Beckham. The language barrier is more prominent as there aren't many people that speak English in Shanghai. The hotel staff do speak English although sometimes it can be limited - they will understand you eventually. For example, we ordered room service breakfast a few times and on the menu one of the options for yoghurt is plain - when asked which flavour we wanted they didn't understand 'plain'. Even though this was in their own menu. They seem to have a different list of options at the other end of the telephone - there option being original. My husband thought they were saying orange. We got there in the end! The language barrier is also apparent when travelling in a taxi. One thing I have struggled with is the lack of chinese address on English booking forms you print off - You need your address in Chinese if travelling from airport/train station to your hotel as the taxi driver will not understand the address in English. I do not know why they do not put this on your booking form. It is worth taking out the hotel card wallet they put your room key in as this has the address in chinese and a little map to show taxi driver. Then you will always find your way back quickly - if travelling with children you don't always have the luxury of time when they are tired/cranky. Location is ideal as it is close to main shopping street and quick walk to the bund. Would recommend a trip to the French concession and the shopping bizarre there - taxi or metro for this trip. Overall our stay in this hotel was superb. I couldn't fault it. I would definitely recommend this hotel and it would be my first choice of visiting Shanghai again.

Great location, very uncomfortable bed

The hotel was lovely looking and close to Nanjing Road. The mattresses need replacing, the springs were poking through. When we asked for another bed, we came back in the afternoon to find they placed sheets of wood over the mattress under the sheets hahaha. The lifts are noisy of a night but not as noisy as the staff walking the halls talking very loudly amongst themselves. The Howard Johnson a block away would have been the better choice.

Great location but still some distance to go on service

I arrived after an overnight flight and was told I had to wait until 10am to check in (or pay for an extra night). Fair enough but the lobby was cold & draughty (the receptionist wore an overcoat) and it took an hour to track down someone to return my stored luggage with my warm jacket. So I sat dozing and cold, waiting and waiting...

Grand Central Shanghai

A very good hotel within easy walking for the Bund. Metro station located near by. Very helpful staff with a lovely clean spacious room. Our room had a view of the atrium which was not a problem and good value four money. Check in and departure was efficient and well handled. Would use this hotel again if ever in Shanghai.

Ideal location

The hotel is perfectly located. It is just an easy 15 minute walk to the Bund, 50 yards from the lively pedestrianised Nanjing Road shopping centre and less than 5 minutes walk to the Metro. Unlike some other reviewers we found the hotel staff to be very polite and helpful. As an example we arrived at 0930am and were allowed to check in early free of charge and the concierge staff made it easy to book trips and taxis. The restaurant was a little pricey but on a par with similar grade hotels. The nearby Mojo Cafe does a good all day breakfast for about £5 and there is an excellent small bakery a few minutes away. We would certainly use the hotel again should we ever return to Shanghai.
