Convention

The Walter E Washington Convention Centre is a massive complex in the heart of downtown Washington, with easy access to many different Washington hotels. With 77 individual meeting rooms, it can hold events for up to 42,000 people. While you are there, view the $4 million art collection on display.

Dining

Many of Washington's best restaurants are in the downtown area and the White House district while Capitol Hill is the place to head for if you favour the more relaxed style of food markets and stalls. Washington has a reputation for its extensive ethnic dining opportunities such as Etete, a popular Ethiopian restaurant on 9th Street NW, where you can sample their speciality, called Kitfo, a marinated beef dish.

Shopping

Washington has extensive shopping opportunities, close to all the major hotels. Union Station, once one of the world's largest train stations, is now a one-stop shopping and dining experience. Those seeking a more alternative Washington experience should head for the Dupont Circle area. This vibrant, artsy scene is also the centre of the gay community in Washington and is home to one of the country's most impressive farmer's markets, FreshFarm Market.

Major Points of Interest

The capital of the USA has dozens of places worth visiting but the best is the Smithsonian Institution, which is a complex of multiple museums scattered throughout Washington DC, mainly between Third and Fourteenth Streets. And of course, no one should miss a tour of the US Capitol Building, the White House and the Supreme Court.

Sports

One of the breakout sports in Washington is football, or soccer for Americans, with DC United being one of the best teams in the MLS. The Washington Redskins, however, are what Americans know as footballers. The Redskins regularly sell out the 50,000-seat stadium FedEx Field. Meanwhile the Verizon Center is home to both the Washington Capitals ice hockey team and the Washington Wizards basketball team.
