The room was so small, window didn’t open much, so too hot. The property was tired and in need of renovation. The shower wouldn’t heat. There was no vent in the bathroom that worked. Very disappointing room for the price.

Thank you for your review. Hotel windows can not be opened fully as they have for H&S restriction. with regards to the vent in the bathroom, it has a constant fresh air supply via the air-vent in tot he bedroom but there no fan attached.

Stayed for the weekend to visit the xmas market. Hotel in a great location, right opposite the cathedral, everything was walking distance. The hotel was vey nice, we had a really nice room, 4 poster bed, sitting area with a sofa, very spacious. Bed was super comfy, plenty of pillows as well. Didn't have breakfast or eat at the hotel so can't comment on the food. Would definitely stay again.

Nice friendly staff. Bedroom wardrobe was very narrow so unable to hang clothes properly in it. Bathroom was ok but toilet was difficult to flush and took ages to refill after flushing and very noisy. View from bedroom window was a bit grim as looked straight across a narrow road to a building site so felt a bit like we were being watched at times. Room was small and double bed was pushed up to the wall which made getting in and out difficult. However for the price and location it was ok.

Location: Rick Steins restaurant round the corner was very good.
Recently visited and stayed 1 night.Main priority was central location ,parking and obviously a good nights sleep as we had been on the road a lot.The hotel was satisfactory and fulfilled all requirements, the buffet breakfast overlooking the cathedral was also excellent.Would definately stay again.

It was a nice hotel but the room was very hot with only a small fan. The bathroom wasn't as clean I expected. But a fab location and would come back again.

Quick stopover

We chose this hotel because they accept dogs, but they do charge extra for this and I have no idea why! Ours has her own bed. We stay in a lot of hotels, and I have high expectations. Not many hotels meet them. The Mercure Winchester is so near and yet so far. The location is strange, right next to the Cathedral, which of course is impressive, but how they ever got planning permission for the building which now houses the Mercure is totally beyond me. If you don't have a Cathedral view, the view you will have will almost certainly be of a back lane. Parking is not easy, and gives rise to yet another charge. The staff were very good, genuinely friendly, and really helpful - a special mention to the lovely Spanish lady who served us in the restuarant. Which brings us to the food. There was a Xmas party on so we chose the Xmas menu. The starter was lovely, the main course was, in all honesty, well below average, and nowhere near as good as I would expect from this chain. Desert was pretty awful mass produced fare, and quite ghastly really. Usually Mercure food is excellent. Brittany Ferries produce better food than this, for a lot less money. The room was comfortable, but very noisy. Notwithstanding the ongoing Xmas party, which you can forgive, (and which ended at midnight) there was a constant loud power hum, and lots of plumbing noises from adjoining rooms. Excessive amounts. Overall we had a poor night's sleep the bed was very nice, but the noises just too disturbing and it's very doubtful whether we would stay again. A shame, as it could be so much better. I thought it was just a bit too expensive overall.

great location - medeocre staff

Booked two rooms well in advance & rechecked but did not have double room on our arrival as requested. No-one at reception on arrival & eventually vacant receptionist arrived. Pre booked details were incorrect on checking in (a guest from chicago???) - told to cross out & put our details in ... Rooms good, location superb, no experience of restaurant.
