Lovely

The hotel is located in the heart of the city centre but in a quiet side street. Characterful 16th Century building, lovely quiet, comfortable room with excellent facilities.

Anniversary midweek break

My wife and I stayed here for one night to celebrate our 15th anniversary. The hotel foyer and reception are a little dated and there is a mouldy smell that you find in older buildings. There however the bad news ends. The room was nicely furnished and very clean. The staff were very accommodating and the hotel is perfectly situated in the centre of town. The historic high st is literally a minutes walk from the front door and the Cathedral only a minute or two further . Would definitely stay here again!

Catering

Pros: Reception, the room were fine and the breakfast was fairly good.
Cons: The restaurant.
Two bottles of white wine in the evening - neither seemed adequately chilled. Dinner : main courses fine, desserts - only a choice of three out of five. We asked for the cheese selection - couldn't have the choices on the menu as " we've runout as the hotel only has cheese delivered once a month!" Eventually had a platter with some slices of Brie, Cheddar and another cheese. All in all hardly a 4 star performance.t

Nice room. Shame about the breakfast.

Pros: The room
Cons: The breakfast
Location: Good central position. The parking fee is substantial but not unreasonable, given the location.
Admirably comfortable and well-appointed room. Breakfast was a let-down. In hotels of a similar class in which I have stayed recently an English breakfast is cooked to order. Lukewarm eggs congealing on heated trays are no substitute. The coffee was frightful, too—so bad as to taste almost like instant. Otherwise a good hotel that I'd happily use again.

Pros: Convenient position. Helpful staff. Breakfast good and good value. Parking available at reasonable rate.
Overnight stay. In city centre but generally quiet and relaxing.

A good base for exploring Winchester.

Location: The Royal is very central, just a few minutes walk from the shops, Cathedral, eateries/bars and the station. The museum is well worth a visit.
This was the third time I'd stayed at the Royal. I noticed particularly how friendly the staff are, always greet you with a 'good morning' etc. and it sounds sincere, not just because they're told to. I can't comment on the dinner menu but the buffet style breakfast was good with a range of full English fare or Continental. The only minus is that if you want other than fried eggs you have to ask and it can be a bit of a scrum at busy times. My room was quiet and located in the newer wing this time rather than the older part of the hotel. This is quite extensive on three levels and a fair walk to Reception/Lounge/Bar etc. and involving stairs. This was not a problem for me but might be for less abled guests; I didn't notice a lift although there might be one somewhere. The room was a good size and comfortable, the bathroom was well equipped and kept very clean during my stay. If I was to be a bit picky I would add that the shower head fixing rail was a bit loose, the basin waste did not seal fully, the bedroom windows did not seem able to be opened on a limited night vent setting, there were a few cobwebs and tea stain splashes on the wall near the waste bin, the sheets were not fully straightened and tucked in each day, and there was a dead spider and other small bits that were not hovered up. Despite saying this I didn't feel strongly enough to complain but if I had I'm sure the response would have been positive. Overall a pleasant stay.
