Gourmands think nothing of hopping on flights from London to Lyon simply to satisfy their palate. Lyon is widely acclaimed as France’s gastronomic epicentre – no mean feat in a country where food is an art form. The old town is a storybook scene of cobblestone streets, quaint renaissance buildings and beautifully decorated squares. It sometimes feels like you've just stumbled on to a film set, rather than France’s third largest city. Quite appropriate really, as Lyon was the home of the legendary Lumière brothers.
Treat yourself to a fabulous French weekender and start comparing London Lyon flights. Outside of the peak Easter and Christmas periods, you’ll find some great deals, with a little flexibility. September is a great time to jet off. Enjoy a later summer in Lyon sampling the city’s legendary al fresco café scene. Book at least two months before for the cheapest flights.
Luton offers the cheapest flight options to Lyon and getting there is a breeze by train. Services depart through the day from London St Pancras station. Trains call at Luton Airport Parkway which links to the airport terminal by shuttle bus. The journey time from central London is about 40 minutes. There are also several cheap bus services direct to the airport from London Victoria Bus Station.

Lyon St Exupery Airport (LYS) is 20 miles east of the city centre. There are a couple of hassle-free options to get you downtown quickly. The Lyon Express tram is best and will whisk you into the city in 30 minutes. Discounted tickets can be booked in advance online. The airport is also served by numerous shuttle buses which serve the region’s ski resorts during the winter season. Taxi ranks are located at Terminals 1 and 2 and fares to the city centre cost around EUR 45. The airport has three terminals but they're compact enough that they can all be reached on foot.
Lyon’s compelling mix of old and new casts a magical spell, and you’ll be snapping selfies throughout the Old Town. Gaze gleefully at Cathédrale St-Jean and the dazzling Italianate façade of the 400-year-old City Hall. As a former silk-weaving epicentre, Lyon displays its myriad of silky treasures in its many museums and galleries. Visit Lyon’s famed ‘Little Louvre’ and the Musée des Beaux-Arts, or swoon over the sparkling imagery from the early days of cinema at Musée Lumière. You’ll also be licking your lips at the prospect of palate-pleasing gastronomy, as there are more eateries per head than anywhere else in France, with more than a dozen boasting Michelin stars.
