What you can expect

Learn the storey of the Burma Railway with a 2-day tour along the route of the infamous railway. Visit the River Kwai Bridge, see memorials to the prisoners and forced labourers who were made to work on its construction during World War II, and see its lasting impact on the country.

Day 1: After a pickup from your Bangkok hotel, leave the city behind and ride west to Kanchanaburi. When you arrive, you can visit an interactive museum at the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre for a moving look at the history of the railway, as well as the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, where nearly 7,000 prisoners of war are buried, and the famous bridge whose construction inspired the film The Bridge on the River Kwai.

In the afternoon, a long-tailed boat takes you to your riverside hotel, where you have lunch before a boat trip upstream to visit the nearby Mon tribal village. Get a look at traditional life and the local temple before you return to the hotel and eat dinner while enjoying the peaceful and rhythmic sounds of the jungle that colour your night.

Day 2: After breakfast, take a long-tailed boat downstream to Resotel Pier, and then ride up to the Hellfire Pass Memorial. No longer used as an active railway, Hellfire Pass became infamous for the loss of life and harsh conditions suffered by labourers during its construction.

Have lunch at a local restaurant, and then board a train for a ride along a section of the original railway, passing over a wooden viaduct constructed by Allied POWs. Return to Bangkok with a deeper understanding of this chapter in the history of Thailand and the war.
